Goals & Gains Lug's Spear: Unleashed S&P

BJJ last night - advanced class did some collar choke defense in guard and then 45 min of rolling. It was not a good night of rolling for me. I’ve been feeling kind of banged up and I think it was distracting me. I’ve also had a sinus infection that I’m on antibiotics for so they probably doesn’t help. I went in planning to try a north south choke and my one attempt was a flop. I’m going to try to focus on recovery until I go back Saturday and see if that helps. I also did the beginner class after, I was pretty tired when I got home.

Yeah, sounds like you need to back off a little and give your body a chance to heal. I know it's easier said than done. My training partners have always been cool if I've asked to do technique because I was injured and couldn't Roll. I still felt like a fucking pussy watching everyone else smash each other into the mats. But sometimes, you just have to accept your physical limitations.

Hope you get well soon, man.

It’s a good idea, I just have a bunch of sore joints right now and it’s really frustrating. Only 2 more days on this antibiotic thankfully. I appreciate the support and I usually feel the same way. Rolling is my favorite part and I hate missing out,

I know the feeling. I got dead-legged on Wednesday. It must have happened during Rolling, but with the adrenalin pumping, I didn't notice it until after the class. I had to back off slightly on SS Bar Box Squats today, which was frustrating. But I have to give the injury a chance to heal.

Going balls to the wall in every single training session is not sustainable, unfortunately.

Morning lifting - bench 5x5, db rows 3x5, overhead press 3x10, lateral raises 3x20.

Afternoon BJJ - We practiced a judo throw harai ogoshi I think it’s called. Then a kesa gatame submission, shoulder lock. 30 minutes of rolling. Only subs I got were heel hooks and an aoki lock. I tried for a north south choke again, but the guy got a hand into the hold and survived it. Much better day of jiu jitsu for me than my other session. I’m having a lot of fun using k guard from closed guard to enter heel hook attacks.

Morning BJJ - snuck away from work to do some BJJ training, dropped in at some place ive never been. My gym isn’t open on Fridays. We drilled a spider guard sweep and armbar. Then the rest of the time was rolling. This place is more of an old school style gym where people roll fairly hard. It was good training, but I was mostly on the defense. I had the most fun rolling with the purple belts, they were much more technical and I got kneed in the head less rolling with them. Still fun to try different places.

BJJ this afternoon - back at my regular gym. Practiced some scissor sweeps, hip bump sweeps, and a lasso sweep. Did some guard passing positional rounds. I got paired up with a teenager after which was super boring, but maybe I needed it after yesterdays training.

Went to four different BJJ gyms in 4 days, fun experience. I had a slow day at work Friday and snuck out, then had to work in a town an hour away for 2 days this week so I dropped in.

Friday - Gym close to my gym, but my gym isn’t open Friday so I stopped by here. Apparently there is gym drama I didn’t know about, they respectfully talked down about my current gym. This brown belt guy came up to me and said ‘just want to let you know you’re going to get your ass kicked today, definitely wear your mouth guard we roll hard.’ It wasn’t too bad really, I was mostly on the defensive in the rounds though. This was
Like a cobra Kai experience.

Saturday - went back to my gym, it actually felt kind of too slow for me after the day before. I got paired up with a teenage girl for 25-30 minutes of rolling. We don’t have a round timer so I didn’t get to switch partners. I just let her work on moves and when she asked I shared my techniques. Almost the opposite experience of Friday.

Sunday - went to a friends house who has two wrestling mats in the garage with four people there total. Worked on some single leg takedowns, north south choke, and darce stuff. Then we went to open mat at my friends gym for an hour and practiced some overhook guard attacks and rolled for 30 minutes.

Monday - I did a 6am BJJ class, they didn’t even charge me a drop in fee. Place was full suprisingly. Worked on Mount attacks to an arm triangle. Then did some rolling. This was probably my best experience, several black belts present, everyone was friendly, people went at their own pace. A bunch of people took test rounds which shocked me because most places I go to people don’t do that unless you are hurt, but I respect that it’s a more relaxed setting.

Well I’m pretty sore after training four days straight, going to give BJJ a rest for a couple days, hopefully walk this afternoon.

Cobra Kai brown belt sounds like a douche. That would never happen at my academy, and we have some mat-monsters. You roll at your own pace. If both of you want to try and Hulk Smash each other, go for it. But if one person wants to take it down a notch, his partner is expected to respect that.

I've just bought myself a Safe Jawz. I got elbow-smashed in the jaw during a roll on Wednesday. An accident of course, but I ended up biting my own tongue. I decided to get myself a gumshield; it's considered bad form to spit blood and teeth onto your partner. :)

Yeah the brown belt guy came up to me and was mumbling something a the said ‘ok let’s go.’ So I was like uhhh ok and followed him to the mat and tried to roll as light as I could to show I didn’t come to the gym to prove anything, just to get in some friday training. It’s really weird because my gym doesn’t talk about their gym at all. Yeah I’m sold on the mouth guard thing. I hate that feeling when your teeth violently clack into eachother when someone hits you.

Not everybody wants to roll like they're in training for the ADCC finals. Anyone who came to our Academy and tried to smash people into the mats, especially weaker opponents, would find out very quickly why it was a bad idea. I've seen it happen, and it's not pretty.

I’ve been lifting every other day, just taking it easy on that and trying to get back into it. I stopped jogging for the most part and switched to walking while my knee has been feeling a little off. Trying to be very cautious.

BJJ last night - practiced deep half guard, my favorite half guard, sweeping to the back during class. Did 30 min of rolling with the same partner. I had some decent success with 50/50, hit a couple heel hooks and a Woj lock (reverse aoki) on 50/50 for the first time. Hit a kimura and also a kimura sweep from halfguard. What I was most excited about was landing a north south choke. I did get caught in an arm in guillotine and a heel hook.
