Goals & Gains Lug's Spear: Unleashed S&P

Afternoon BJJ - we practiced collar chokes from guard and triangle chokes from guard. Did some rolling where we start in someone’s guard. I had a pretty good day rolling. I rolled with other blue belts and didn’t get tapped, but tapped all of them. The majority of my subs were heel hooks set up using k guard. Got a couple ankle locks, brabo choke, armbar, omoplata as well. My plan of embracing leg locks has been a fun side quest. I think I have more time training than all the people I was pared up with so it’s good to be on par. Hopefully it keeps up.

I think I might switch out BORs for this, thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately I’ve thrown my back out 3-4 times in my life and it’s usually shortly after I do deadlifts during the week.

I used to Deadlift with a standard Olympic barbell. After one too many back strains, I switched to Trap Bar and found it much easier on my lower back. I'm still very careful with Deadlifting, but the TB has made a real difference.

Rack Pulls can be another option.

Yesterday afternoon BJJ - practiced kimura from guard. Learned some cool stuff I have not seen before. Most of what we do I’ve already seen somewhere so that was kind of neat. I had a weird day of rolling. People weren’t tapping to my leglocks when they usually do. I’m not sure if they are just tired of my bullshit or if my mechanics are jacked up. I’m not willing to try to blow someone’s knee out to see if I have it right. I had this one purple belt in a heel hook and he wouldn’t tap. I wasn’t willing to apply anymore pressure either. Same thing happened on an aoki lock I had on a blue belt. I’ve focused too much on entries I think and not enough on finishing mechanics. Back to studying I guess. Still a good night of rolling though.

Last night BJJ - attended the beginners class. We worked on standing guillotine chokes and using the guard to prevent strikes. It was nice to meet some new people. It was also good to take some time from rolling as my wrist had been hurting past week or so. Hopefully back to rolling on Monday.

last night jog - 3 miles in 36 minutes on the treadmill (5mph). 10 minute cool down walk. Watched guard retention videos by Xande.

Morning lifting today - bench 5x5, squats 5x5, kettlebell rows, DV lateral raises. Watched danaher leglock videos.

Yesterday jog - 3 miles in 36 min on the treadmill. 10 minute cool down walk.

Afternoon BJJ - I we did nogi tonight working on entering the knee slice pass from a standing guard break. Started rounds from guard. I had some luck with ankle locks, arm triangles, and a ‘ninja roll’ to calf slicer. I feel like my timing has been getting better. Still working on switching over to a particular set of leg entanglements and not using single leg x as much.

Ran the 5k yesterday with no issues. Jogged the whole thing without stopping pushing the stroller. I had plenty in the tank when I finished the race and could have gone a little faster.

After the 5k I went to BJJ working on several styles of guard passes. Rolling was pretty boring, instructor didn’t have us change partners and I got paired up with a teenager who wasn’t all that experienced. Just let them play around with trying to solve problems I set up for them.

Lifted weight this morning - bench 5x5, squat 5x5, KB rows, lateral raises.

1 mile trail work this afternoon.

Afternoon BJJ yesterday - advanced class - worker on several different guard passes in no gi. It’s fun to do no gi every once in a while since we mostly do gi. In rolling I mostly hit heel hooks or rear naked chokes. Still having weird issues where I don’t get taps fast on my single leg x outside heel hook or the saddle inside heel hook. I guess I have more work to do studying that. I hit a heel hook from 50/50 and it was an instant tap. Maybe it’s because I use that one the most and my mechanics are best there? Had a weird scenario where I had a purple belt in a saddle position from a failed kimura. I had his heel and everything and he said ‘you don’t have it just let it go, you’re trying too hard.’ Not sure why he didn’t just try to defend it, but I let him go.

Beginners class - worked on a takedown and butterfly sweep. I’m a big fan of butterfly sweeps so that was nice. I was pretty tired I was basically at the BJJ place from 6:30pm to 10:00pm.

Yesterday afternoon BJJ - practiced some more guard passes from kneeling in closed guard and also butterfly guard. Rolling was kind of meh, paired with a black belt initially which was fun. Then paired up with a physical blue belt. His style is really interesting, he doesn’t really care about positions and just tries to snatch stuff like wrist locks. I got him with a guillotine and got his back 2x. His back escapes were pretty good, couldn’t get him there. Last 2x rounds were with teenagers. I just practiced entering into ankle locks and letting them work out of it.

Today afternoon jog. 3 miles in 36 minutes at 5mph speed. Needed to get back to jogging. Haven’t done much of it since the 5k. I’m eyeing another 5k coming up in 2 months.

missed logging a few workouts here. Been to jiu jitsu 2x and jogged 1x since last logging. Starting to realize when I try to jog faster I enjoy it less. Going to just try to say at the same speed for a while until it feels a little easier. BJJ has been going well. Having a little more success with the Darce. Tried to back off the leglocks for a second and I didn’t enjoy it. I’m just a leglocker I guess.
