Goals & Gains Lug's Spear: Unleashed S&P

Leg Locks scare the shit out of me. I might try to fight an Armbar, Kimura or RNC, depending on how good my opponent is. As soon as someone gets the LL on, I Tap straight away.
the scary thing with heel hook is you can’t rely on pain to know when to tap. Usually it’s too late by then. I just tap if they lock in the grip on the heel hook. Ankle locks are a lot safer and less damaging. My knee injury came from an inside heel hook out of 50/50 where the guy didn’t let go right away when I tapped. I’m starting to hate 50/50, even for me it’s too risky.

Yeah, that's what I was told: there are relatively few nerve-endings in the legs, compared to other parts of the body. That means by the time you feel the pain of a Heel Hook or Kneebar, you're very close to getting your shit snapped up.

As soon as someone gets me in a leg lock, I tap straight away. The way I see it, I'm rolling, not fighting in the Mundials.

Went to BJJ yesterday. We practiced some butterfly sweeps and pendulum sweep. Rolling was pretty good, 45 minutes with mma gloves to simulate a self defense scenario. Landed a couple armbars, knee bar, and ankle lock with different training partners. It’s different since one partner is mostly supposed to try to punch (lightly) as much as they can. Just kind of happy that my butterfly ashi ankle lock is coming together.

Reminds me of the old joke that if you punch a BJJ Black Belt enough times, he eventually turns into a White Belt. ;)

I could see that, it is very distracting to worry about getting punched when trying to go for moves. The more I think about it the more I feel like doing everything you can to get to Mount is the best move for self-defense. In Mount they can’t reach for the waistband easily to grab a weapon and they can’t hit you with really any power. It makes me consider spending less time in side control and focusing more on getting to mount fast.

morning jog - 3 miles in 34 minutes on the treadmill. First mile 10 minutes, second and third miles were jogged in 12 minutes. 10 minute cool down walk. Watched Danaher half guard retention instructional during jog. 10 minute pace tired me out more than I thought. Going to sign up for a 5k that takes place in March.

Afternoon BJJ - we practice some self defense stuff in the event your opponent is standing and you are seated or on the ground. Then some no-go rolling. I had some decent exchanges. Still struggling to finish the north south choke lately. Got some RNCs, Far side armbars from side control, and an omoplata from guard. I was kind of bummed I lost an ankle lock, it’s a little more challenging in nogi I think.

Afternoon jog - 3 miles in 32 minutes, followed by a 13 minute cooldown walk. First 2 miles were at 10 minute mile pace and last mile was 12 minute mile pace. Trying to see how close I am to a 30 minute 5k. Not quite there yet I don’t think. Watched a Gordon Ryan armbar instructional while jogging.

Morning jog - 1 mile in 11 minutes, then walked until I hit 45 minutes. Not really feeling it today. Think I need to go back to relax mode on jogging.

Afternoon BJJ - we practiced collar chokes from guard and a couple responses to counters. Had some good rolling, many back takes from guard that I learned from a Giancarlo Bodini video. It’s actually a good combo for me since if I can’t get their arm across their body they usually pull it out and it sets up an overhook to my omoplata series. I did not attempt any leglocks which kind of shocks me. Overall a good class and rolling session. Got some turf toe going, hopefully it doesn’t feel too bad in the morning.

I somehow managed to get sick for the 3rd time in 3 months. Only bonus is I lost all the weight I re-gained from the last time I was sick. Still have a cough so I’m going to have to skip BJJ the rest of this week.

Morning Jog - 2.5 miles at 5mph in 30 minutes. 15 minute cool down walk. Had to cough every few minutes, but it was doable. I watched some videos on Danaher’s arm triangle finish. It was my move for a minute the last time I studied it, but recent months I’ve had a hard time finishing it. Can’t believe how many details I forgot from this stuff.

Morning lifting - 3x5 bench, 3x5 rows, lateral raises. Now I remember why I don’t lift as much. Lower back is sore from all that deadlifting in the past when I do this stuff.

You could try Pull-Ups, as they focus on the upper and mid back, rather than put strain on the lower section like Deadlifts do.

I think I might switch out BORs for this, thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately I’ve thrown my back out 3-4 times in my life and it’s usually shortly after I do deadlifts during the week.
