Economy Let's talk gas prices

@Jack V Savage

what happened to under 3% inflation?

Gas is up $1.12 since last year. $70 plywood. I went to buy some fucking chicken wings for the first time in forever yesterday from my favorite spot. They were $14, they used to be nine.

<KhabibBS>
Lumber is way up..
imagine if Trump was president headlines would say "failing economy, gas prices up with people struggling under Trump admin. May be correlated to rise of suicides'".

It's been about the same for years for me although I drive about 1/10th as much now.

There was a dip in the year-ago period (not sure if you heard about it, but there was a pandemic). Also, Inflation measures are averages. Some prices rise more than average and some less.

Anyway, good glance into the numbers in this thread:

Not really. At all times, some prices rise more than average so you can actually test your theory (just look back on coverage of whatever prices were rising the most while Trump was president). The MSM doesn't operate like Breitbart in reverse.

It absolutely does, but then again in 2016 you said CNN treated Trump better than Hillary and gave him more positive press lol..

Where you been? you haven't been that active, I hope al is good

Well, did you try to test your theory? I think it's obvious that it's wrong, but I recommend doing the research (and report back if you think you have something). And, yeah, CNN messed up in 2016.

Too active! And, yeah, all has been good. Ditto.

It’s up 35% by me since November. According to this chart, it hasn’t been this high in 9 years.
I don’t know enough about gas policy to blame all of this on Biden, but I have to assume most of it can be traced back to his policies. Feel free to correct me ...

I know it always goes up in the summer, but it’s only March atm, too early for that annual rise.

Seems like everything is steadily going up as the economy recovers and things open up. It's like companies are trying to gouge to make up for lost time. Look at what they are charging for rental cars now. What was $32 a day is now over $100.

Krugman wrote about this yesterday:

So yes, sawmill operators, who expected a longer slump, got caught short, leading to sky-high lumber prices. Rental car companies, which sold off a large part of their fleets last year, are now scrambling to buy vehicles again, helping to send used-car prices soaring. And so on.

I don't think companies have that much pricing power, but there are some bottlenecks that are driving some prices up. There's nothing actually preventing supply increases, though, so it's just a temporary blip.

Paying around $2.80/gallon of diesel around Austin. Not too bad but not good either.

Yes, and chip shortage leading to a scarcity of cars driving up prices too. Suddenly there is not enough of everything so people will charge more.

Ever wonder if these are manufactured problems? Seems like a consistent theme.

I think it's kind of expected that in an environment of relatively low predictability, people are going to make some mistakes.

Just seems to be pretty consistent in many industries right now. Pretty coincidental.

Man, these headlines.......yuck

the party that is responsible for higher gas prices wants to act like they aren’t responsible for higher gas prices
jesus christ man ... lay off the drugs... prices always go up on memorial day weekend

and in your own link they say its
The National Tank Truck Carriers, the industry’s trade group, told CNN in April that 20% to 25% of tank trucks were parked because of a lack of drivers.

Industry experts have warned that this driver shortage and the continued reopening of the U.S. economy, among other factors, could lead to potential gas shortages ― and thus higher prices ― this summer.

but you just keep lying and eating paint chips
"hurr durr democrats gas prices hurr durrr"

Gas prices soared ahead of Memorial Day in both of those years. In 2018, the average cost for a gallon of gas was $2.97, according to AAA. The following year, the average was around $2.80, following the largest U.S. gas price surge since 2011.

at least try to post links that dont completely expose you for the partisan hack you are...

Republican lawmakers have blamed the Biden administration for the recent spike in gas prices. As The Washington Post noted, economists have largely pinpointed the reopening of the U.S. and other global economies as a primary cause.

Its problary going to continue to rise during the summer/spring. This is because Biden has decided to go green energy.
So expect the oil prices to rise.

So even more reason to go green. Should not have to pay higher fees for fuel just at the whims of the oil industry.

Ugh no..Not really a good reason to go green.

Should not have to pay higher fees for fuel just at the whims of the oil industry
Food prices will be rising to not just oil. Also you will be paying more for your EV V then your oil/gas car.
