How long is a fight with such a monster?I caught a 238lb Halibut today. I would've released it but it swallowed jig and was severely bleeding, and wasn't putting up much of a fight when we got it to the surface. It will feed a lot of people luckily.
I can't give a like. Great post!!!We are cooking him Saturday! Gar is very tasty if you cook it right!

Sunfish: the panfish?grew up back east.
caught blue fish, flounder and blow fish.
out west mainly lake and river fishing for trout.
up in Minnesota used to catch something called sunfish.
flounder like.
Is it hard to prepare the fish? Thanks Sherbro! We ate that thing good. Ready to go back next Sept for more
I bet. I love panfish as much as walleye and so does my wife.yea, probably.
bunch of relatives at a cabin on Lake Elizabeth.
we'd go out and bring back dozens of these little fish,
scaling and fish fry would ensue.
good times.
Only about 20 mins. It actually didn't put up much of a fight. It was using the barn door method and just using its dead weight and gravity in the water. It badly swallowed the hooks and was bleeding badly, otherwise, I usually let the giant go. Only needed one crack from the metal baseball bat to kill it.Fishing from the shore is almost over here in Québec, so I decided to go out tonight to see if the walleyes were still close to shore even though it was pretty cold (2 Celsius - 28F for you heathens).
The ice forming in the rod's guides were a bitch to deal with, but it was worth it. Last fresh fish for a while.

View attachment 987891 Just got back from vacay. Went to Carolina beach, NC. On the first morning we were there, I got up early and drove the 30 mins to Wilmington and fished greenfield park. I was tossing a top water frog when I got blasted and had a fish on. I fought to get her in and she was big, and put up a fight. I got her about 15 feet from shore when she got tangled in the weeds. I only had 15 pound braid and the line broke with the bass being on top of the weeds. She would have baked in the sun. But more immediately, an 8 foot gator came in looking for an easy meal. With its mouth open, it swam towards my bass. I threw some sticks at it but it kept coming. I said fuck it and jumped in the lake and ran out to get my bass before the gator did. Grabbed her. Weighed her at 4.2, but my scale fucks about sometimes and I rarely trust it and think she was heavier, but whatever. View attachment 987890
I have relatives in Wilmington that live in a gated community with many golf course ponds. A few years back I dragged my kayak onto one at night during a warm spell in February and started tossing around a frog. Caught so many including two 5 pounders that were clearly in prespawn mode. Fishing a frog at night can be tough but it can be fun fishing using only sound and feel.
Greenfield lake is where I first used a frog to catch a bass for the first time. This was back in the 90s. But it is always a fun way to fish, providing you can actually hook them up, which is why I rock with a trailer hook. I tried a few other areas called burnt mill creek and I have had success there, but not the last two years.
Incidently, that greenfield bass was the biggest of the year and I ended up having one of the worst fishing years since 2019. 2021 wasn’t great, but 22 was awesome. I started to get my 13 year old fishing but we didn’t have any luck in some spots where I have in the past and I was discouraged by that because I wanted to get him on some fish.
This was my first year not doing any frog fishing. I got too caught up in fluke fishing this summer. I used to frog fish obsessively and got pretty damn good at it. The trailer hook isn’t necessary.
If you ever get a chance to go for snakeheads….that is frog fishing at its finest. You can find northern snakeheads in PA, NJ, Virginia, and Maryland. Bullseye snakeheads in Florida. They are mean and fight super hard. I’ve seen them break off 65# braid. Bowfins are similar enough though if you can get them to eat frogs, although their mouth is bony so a mean hookset and good pressure is needed.
