Lets talk fishing

It's on the smaller side but it appears to be a longnose gar, they don't get anywhere near as big as the alligator gar you're likely thinking of
I’m into the aquarium hobby so when I think of gars I think of the spotted gar.
I always thought long nose got about 3.5-4ft long.

Wasn't even the biggest one caught that night. My buddy caught 6 that were all 15 to 25 lbs

How did yours cook up?

Are those blues?

I always take several different rods with me, a lot of the time I don't really know what I'm going to be dealing with structure wise the first time I try a lake. If the lake is full of thick weeds a heavier rod and reel combo spooled with braid would be the best choice.

I have a minimum of three rods on me at all times. It sucks to carry them everywhere or have them in the kayak, but I like to be able to toss different lures while picking apart an area.

Isn't that really small for a gar?

Depends on the type. This was a longnose gar. That was medium for my area. I have seen some up to five feet long, but most are 3 feet or so. Alligator gar are the big bastards and they are not around here.

How do you find fishing from a kayak? I've got a little inflatable boat with a trolling motor but I wouldn't mind trying kayak fishing again. I found the kayak would spin in circles everytime I would cast, made it impossible to work a lure. That was out of a fishing kayak too so idk how people manage to fish out of them.

All six of those togehter might be 15lbs.
Your buddies weight guesses are way the fuck off.

Kayak fishing has opened up a whole new world for me. I love it. I did not think I would take to the water so easily and it’s like I have been kayaking for years and years.

It is a pain to load and unload the kayak, and I totally fucked up the roof of my Jeep when one of the foam kayak racks flew off and the kayak ground into the roof, but now I have the hang of it and that stuff can be fixed. Now I have a yoga mat I line the roof of my Jeep with that protects it during loading and unloading.

I just really like being on the water and it has really improved my fishing at lakes where I was previously confined to shore fishing. I still walk when I fish for smallmouth because the creek is narrow and rarely gets above waist depth, but I love my kayak. Best thing I have bought

And yes, not management can be tricky in wind or current. I either beach mine to target a specific area or I have an anchor-3 lb weight on a rope that I use to stay in one area.

Hit up my creek again. Lost three, including a pretty decent smallmouth around two pounds. Caught a gar and two smallies. 5E6B29F2-D7AF-4F61-8DA8-FEB8B64491F8.jpeg7C0700DB-38C4-4803-84B2-F4B79AFB0DFB.jpeg491CE670-30C7-4117-97A4-30642B22121E.jpeg

Finally landed a few Iil guys in a local pond yesterday, some bluegills, a baby largemouth and the smallest bullhead I’ve ever seen.

Hit a lake and caught nine. All on plastic worms. Five on a pink zoom worm and four on a wacky rigged strike king worm. The biggest was 3 lb according to scale, but damn she felt and fought bigger. Another 2.4 and some 1.5-2 lbs

Where's a good place to learn about fishing? Did it as a kid sort of aimlessly and have been on a few charters but want to get more into it.

First, determine what species you want to target. For me, bass, always bass. Then maybe download free app Fishbrain and set up a perimeter close to where you live. Your feed will only post catches in your area as well as the name of the water. Investigate. Ask other anglers what they use. We are a pretty open and accommodating bunch on the whole. Watch YouTube videos in your area-otherwise, you get Florida and California delta or Texas fishing which is not the same. What area of the country are you fishing? I may be able to suggest a few

Georgia (Deliverance region, Chattahoochie) to Central Pennsylvania and everything in between. I bounce around this area for work. Wouldn't be against Outerbanks fishing.

check out gone fishing 804, tactical bassin, creek fishing adventures-I’ll tell you why I’m a minute. Cole and jay are a nice couple that fish that region.

As for creek fishing, I think that is where you should start. Walk the creeks and start to learn where the fish hang out. If you are going for bass, smallmouth like rocks and largemouth like wood and Lilly pads and vegetation. When you see big rocks that create a current break, cast a whopper plopper into the slack water behind the boulder and boom!

Just get yourself a combo spinning rod and a few lures and go. If you tell me what you are targeting, I can tell you some lure choices

Thanks I'll check it out. What about salt water fishing? You do any of that?
