I think Yes a lot of gear & tackle is b.s. with the "industry" just trying to catch fishermans wallets, but i also think there is a cultural "cool guy" aspect as well. Like, a lot of fisherman buy & use gear just because others do but not necessarily cuz it works, but because they want to be like the "cool guys"

My brother & i call them Bass Pro Cosplayers. They look the part, dress the part, have all the gear but dont actually catch fish

Honestly, the entire bass industry is based on morons that will pay any amount of money for any contraption if a pro tells them it will catch them more fish. It's down right shocking how much people will spends on a hobby. There are guys out there driving $150k bass boats on the weekends, it's nuts. I have a lot of tackle, but nothing compared to a lot of guys. I know of guys that'll spend hundreds on one lure if it's used to win a big tournament.

Agreed. I don't understand why they do that.

I'll admit I buy too much fishing gear. I love to try new techniques and it's fun to treat myself with new toys. I don't do it for other people. I do it for me.

I see that here too. Guys with brand new Ranger Boats that cost 100K minimum, all the latest tech, expensive gear with a 250hp motor (even tho pretty much all lakes here in Socal have a speed limit of 35mph max) & none of them are catching fish. I just dont understand it. People paying a premium to look the part but not actually doing the thing that they are supposed to be doing . . .
 
Fishing requires you to come down to your own conclusions over time. For example, see how injured baitfish actually act like. I know some dudes who get so twisted with walk the dog....like it needs to be perfectly done with the exact right retrieval speed otherwise its not worth doing to them which is preposterous. Injured baitfish are allover the place.

I know others who only use JDM lures (made in Japan) as they think they catch more fish. And honestly some of the stuff coming out of there is amazing but I have just the same luck with temu imitations that cost a 3rd. Or they think color is super important and I guess it can be for certain situations or species but lure action trumps color for me.

Its an echo chamber but you don't need to follow the herd to be successful.

I am not a huge walk the dog type fisherman. When using a frog, I just drag it over cover and don’t bother walking it. I don’t know, maybe I would get more strikes if I did?

I don’t freshwater fish much so can’t be much help there since I’ve never used one of those hefore

This dude is by far my favorite YouTuber for fresh tho. He does alright pal

I don't walk the dog much. I do it with Zara Spooks because the lure does it by itself. I do it with frogs too to show a different presentation. We don't know what triggers Bass and pike on days they decide to be ultra patient. It always pays off to show different speeds and movements.

He's my favourite too. He's the Bob Ross of fishing. I only follow 2 fishing channels now: him and @JangoMike. That's it.

I'll do a Youtube search for a technique or a type of lure. I'll watch 3-4 videos, and then go and try what makes sense to me.

Yea I agree. He engages with the viewer so well. Aside from seemingly only catching hogs the other thing that’s great about the channel is that he themes each video with a specific lure and sticks with it the entire time

He has one w a Pokémon lure and destroys w that too.

Some guys think what defines a good fisherman is the equipment or lures they have. The best fisherman know where the fish are at. That’s it

Yep. My favorite as well. I have posted lots of his videos in this thread. I have been with him since 2019 when he first started. We are even Facebook friends because when he was first starting out, he would do that. Now that he has 500k subscribers he doesn’t. He is like the Bob Ross of fishing with his calming voice. His casting skills and paddling skills are top notch and he catches bigs. Check out sotayak fishing as well

That’s so funny. I just posted he was the Bob Ross of fishing and then I saw this. Check out sotayak fishing as well. Really big smallmouth. Same as Matt(ndyak) he just fishes and catches huge smallies and there’s no clickbait. He is also new to the game and responds to any inquiries. I asked him to start weighing his fish and he does and gives me a shout out.

As for the walk the dog, I may try it a bit this year when I do frog fish.
