Lets talk fishing

Do you have a lot of open area for the stripers? They really like being in open water.

Do you have any fatheads or crayfish for lower in the food chain?
These were hybrid stripers, wipers. They usually do well in ponds, and there was a ton of baitfish at that time. I’m really not sure why they didn’t take. I caught one ice fishing their first winter in there, but never caught another. There are still baitfish in there, but I think these days bluegill and baby bass make up most of the food for the larger bass. Used to be tons of 3” perch, fatheads, and golden shiners, but as the bass grew larger after stocking, they cleaned them up.

Between the raccoons and otters, those golden shiners were gone in less than a week. That shiny gold colored fish was irresistible.
It's too bad they lose their golden color as they get older, the young ones look so pretty.

For a while we’d catch a handful of 10” shiners each year in the pond, they’re a pretty cool looking fish. Its been several years now. Otters are fun to watch, but fuck me they’re devestating to fish populations. We have a small creek nearby that used to be easy to wade and catch a bunch of rock bass and smallmouth. Since the otters were reintroduced, I’m lucky to catch one smallmouth in several hours. The rock bass are gone. My youngest son and I started trapping them a couple winters ago. Once you start looking, there’s otter sign everywhere. Its amazing how many there are.

Haven’t taken many pics this year. Mostly fishing our pond the last few weeks as school was wrapping up for the kids. Channel cats are getting ready to spawn, this one was ready to pop. My youngest caught it on 8lb line, not sure why I had him using that rod since he was specifically fishing for cats.View attachment 1045337
You have that in your pond?!?! Would you like to adopt an old man? I cook very well.

I havent been posting much here on sherdog. But ive been fishing a ton since my home repairs finished & putting out the videos on my YT channel (if you feel inclined). I was hoping to add some updated electronics to my Bass Boat but the home repair kicked my ass!

Beware of getting stuck. I learned my lesson about pulling my rod straight back when I was stuck when I was about 14. Had to have a panther-Martin spinner removed from my hand.

if I want to cast a net using muscles as bait is it better to leave them in their shells or take them out?

Got my hands full with two teenage boys already. LOL

Got a decent flathead at a local lake last weekend. Bunch of channels too, but they’re just an annoying bycatch so no pics of them. View attachment 1047006

Very nice! That's my game right there. I've landed 14 of them over 40" since March, plus one that was 39"(35lbs). I caught the same 50 class twice in 10 days. He had a giant nesting scrape on top of his head.....100% the same fish, kind of cool seeing the healing and post spawn weight gain(+2.5lbs) over that time period.

One of these days I’ll pull some pics off of my old laptop. Before I had kids, my fishing partner and I fished nearly every weekend from May to Nov for flatheads. Ohio doesn’t have the numbers or size of them that some states have, but we did pretty well. The goal was a state record (77 lbs) but we never quite got there. Loads of 40-60 lb fish, and a handful over 60. His best was 66, mine was 64. Kids came along so the weekends gone had to end. Then he passed away and I had a tough time going back out for years. Its been nice to get back out there with my youngest really getting into it. The look on his face the first time he felt a 50 lb flathead strip 100’ of line off his reel was fantastic.

Hey Sherbros!

I dragged my boat from SoCal to South East Texas to do some Alligator Gar Fishing using my own gear, electronics & cam systems. I caught quite a bit of River Monsters while there & a bonus Monster Black Drum. Im home editting the footage and should be dropping episodes shortly . . .

It’s about to be prime time fishing on the northeast US where I am. Fall is when the big ones are more likely to hit your lure due to lack of baitfish as they start dying off.

What are you targeting?

Walleyes for me. The evening are starting to get cold and I can't wait for some fat walleyes to come near the St. Lawrence shores.
