Let's talk about Stipes head movement against Ngannou

Glad to see a thread like this OP. Polls are all showing appreciation for Stipe but apparently a vocal minority makes up a lot of posters. Can’t make it very far without seeing someone complain about how Stipe looks “unskilled” on tape.

Glad to see not everyone is blind.

Yeah, it’s pretty impressive. He was a golden gloves boxer.

its easy to move your head when the opponent telegraphs monster single punches with no threat of a combo.

One thing we've learnt about Stipe that night, that all all-time-great fighters do, is that he adapted.

He's never shown that level of head movement in his game before, he was never that type of double leg and run it guy, but he needed to be against Ngannou and pulled of the win.

#UFCHWGOAT.

It also showed that he can follow a game plan. (He did this against hunt too but most of his recent run has been simply engaging and landing first)

He fought the perfect fight against Ngannou. He avoided the early shots, got him tired and took over.

If it's "very easy", then why didn't Overeem exhibit good head movement when he fought Francis?

Nobody said Stipe's head movement is on par with Anderson's, but it's pretty good for a heavyweight.
It is hard to move your head and shit your pants at the same time.

Very easy to look like you have "great" head movement when you're scared shitless. Its the ones who move forward and arent hesitant that display it, that makes me think they are great at it. Stipe in the opening minute was fucking petrified. Call it however you want. He didnt want to be hit. And btw Andersons head movement lead to counters that fucked people up, Stipe simply ran outta there(early on).
Grade A BS. Being scared and doing it wrong is Overeem against Ngannou, being scared and doing it right is Miocic against Ngannou. If you can fight effectively while in imminent danger of decapitation, you are a bad mother fucker. Most people can't because they freeze up.

Exactly, and I can't believe the guy's nickname is SoSoSmart after reading this.
Scared shitless is Overeem vs Miocic, is Werdum vs Miocic, they were so despered that they had to either run away or go for broke.
Stipe has been able to dodge all the big shots and turn Ngannou into a sex doll.
Scared shitless my ass, what do people want ? To go for a drunken men contest and swing until one of them falls ?
This is not the Tank Abbott era anymore dudes :)

If Nganou faked with the left and attempted a right upper cut when stipe was ducking under, would have been same KO as overseen.

Not sure why he was getting so much hate. I thought it was a great performance against a dangerous guy.

He was a little too flat footed at times for my liking, but I think fighting the big guy just took some of his cardio away.

Lol, sorry if I upset you.

Sorry cleveland steamer fan, but your boy is shit.

This is amazing coming from a guy with a Username sososmart.

Should be sosofuckingretarded

You know NOTHING about MMA or boxing

Time for a long walk off a short pier pal

Hey man, although I appreciate you replying to this thread, the proof is in the pudding and it isn't a debate, and Stipe outstruck Ngannou standing so your opinion doesn't hold any water. No one wants to go toe to toe with someone like Ngannou and turn a fight into the battle of chins. I know that you would have personally stood toe to toe with Ngannou with no regards to getting hit but Stipe just isn't as elite as you, so take it easy on him.

Good point, I also noticed that. His head movement looked better than I've ever seen it, same with the takedowns. He definitely rose to the occasion and did what he needed to do to win.

No it isn't. Plenty of UFC fighters fight scared and still have fucking awful head movement. Stipe simply showed very good head movement.

I mean yeah, on the one hand I agree someone like Duran has the ultimate head movement, to be able to move forwards fast and still slip and counter is amazing, but the amount of fighters who do that well is tiny, even in boxing history. Probably count them on one hand.

And Andersons's head movement was scripted and overrated, it only looked awesome against scrubs like Griffin. Stipe showed legit head movement.

Most underrated thing about his performance. That wasn't Silva-esque, that was more impressive than Anderson Silva's head movement ever was.

Lol at anyone who thinks head movement is natural reaction. Backing STRAIGHT up is the NATURAL reaction

This.

I am not seeing too many people talk about this post fight. It is the reason he not only survived against Ngannou but beat him in rd 1 unlike Arlovski, Reem and Bojan. For those of you that don't know Stipe took 1-2 years off early in his MMA career to focus just on boxing, before he came back to MMA full time. He credits this time off from MMA as to why his striking is evolved to the point it is. Not only did it improve his striking offense, but his defense as well which I feel was on full display against Ngannou. I am sure that some people are going to reply to this with him getting KO'd by Struve, or him being tagged by (enter name here) but everyone gets hit at the end of the day. The advantage he has because of this experience is obvious though when it comes to slipping strikes and countering as well as rolling with punches.

^GOAT stipe gif right here, Anderson SIlvaesqe in his head movement Joe^

^ beautfiul slip to straight jab ^

^ rolled with a nice hook from Ngannou into a sick level change ^

Shoutout to @Sansnom for the gifs (si t'es un francophone, merci big) I found these in his thread he made http://forums.sherdog.com/threads/stipe-vs-ngannou-recap-gifs-inside.3697309/

Anyways, I attribute Stipes early success to his head movement if I am being honest. Ngannou has him against the cage and within range a few times and he mostly whiffed telegraphed punches in the first round. Not only is it hard on the cardio but it is very very hard on the confidence, nothing worse than hitting air infact. In rd 1 Stipe outstruck Ngannou with 24 of 33 strikes while Ngannou only landed 18 of 65 total strikes. Those are fantastic numbers to back up how far ahead Stipe is in not only wreslting and grappling, but striking as well when compared to Ngannou.

Anyways I could ramble on forever, thanks for listening.

Cliffs - Amazing head movement by Stipe against Ngannou, very impressed.
Merci, j'apprecie la mention! Et belle analyse, beaucoup mieux décrit que dans mon thread qui était plus comme une sorte de blague lol.

Sorry cleveland steamer fan, but your boy is shit.
I love, love, love how unhappy you are that Ngannou lost. Your angry outburst is to me like relaxing in a warm bubble bath while sipping expensive wine, so thank you!

Lol at Francis 'boxing' . People wanted to see this fool box Anthony Joshua. Ngannou would literally die.
Great movement by stipe. Francis had no answer for any of it expect keep swinging wild haymakers and mainly hitting air.
