Leaving a job you really like on principle

Unfortunately this is true. I'm a foreman with 25 years experience, 15 at this company and I'd be replaced by lunchtime. Everyone is replaceable and thinking you aren't is never good.

Exactly......and tbh, if you are irreplaceable (whose leaving would "have a huge impact and make my boss as well as other top brass' life hell") I'm gonna say that's a terrible company.

I did that back in 2009.

Was not easy for me to just pick up and start over but I dont regret it.

What do you do when you really really like your relatively new job, that has a lot of potential down the road but currently pays shit? Right now my role is crucial to the company, if I were to leave it would have a huge impact and make my boss as well as other top brass' life hell. Yet my boss is still giving me a hard time and paying me much less than I contribute because I haven't been there but 8 months or so

I contribute literally just as much as another worker that makes probably 3xish what I do. I feel like if my boss doesn't wisen up I should quit on principle or at least give an ultimatum. But, I really like the job and there is real potential i could make way more than I ever have in my life in 2-5 years if I stay
You're never as important to a company as you think you are.

You also should never just quit. Find something better and then leave.

Have you brought the raise subject up to your boss, or you're just hoping he remembers? If it's the latter, I would bring it up and see his reaction. If he tries to deflect, avoid the subject or gives non-committal answers, not a good sign.

If the company is cheap now, I don't see why they wouldn't be cheap later. If they viewed you as valuable they would be paying more to lock you down so competitors can't get you. They're not though, so on some level they view you as disposable or unimportant.

Stop crying and playing victim.

Leave and see how quick they find a replacement. If you were sooo important as you think they would pay you more.

Go find another job for a better pay or STFU.

Forgot to add. If you are going to leave, get fired. At least you get unemployment so long as you don't do something crazy or illegal. Check with your state unemployment site 1st for rules. Be a bad worker, get fired, then get unemployment. Some employers will qualify it as layoff. I hate paying taxes and getting nothing back. I have a friend that does this cycle on purpose. I made fun of him for this for a long time. But he laughs last when he is off for 6 months every year or so.

Even if you are important as you think you are, the company will never see you as not replaceable no matter what. What matters more is your boss not keeping his word, so then you can't believe anything else they say. It sounds like a dangling the carrot situation.

It depends. Are you willing to forego the money you could be making in order to work a job that you love? Or does the money mean enough to you that you want to take a chance and move to another job that you may not like?

Apple did ok after Steve Jobs died. I think it’s possible you’re not quite as critical to the running of that company as you think you are.

Same with Vince McMahon.

For years people worried WWE would collapse without Vince......not only did it not, it thrived.

.....but yeah, no one can flip those burgers or salt them fries quite like TS.

I didn't say I was irreplaceable at any point. Of course almost everyone is. I said it would make my boss and other higher ups have a very not good time for quite a while. It would take a long time investment to replace me with someone else.

Absolutely. Which is why it’s best to be an integral part of multiple roles at a company. One role is easily replaced. Being a part of several makes it much harder to replace you. Just a general strategy that more people should consider.

Let's get to the heart of the matter.

You've only been there 8 months. Get a job offer elsewhere and show it to them. If you can't do that then don't rock the boat too hard and stop patting yourself on the back because you're likely not as valuable as you think.

What does your gut tell you?

I bet you're not as important as you think you are.

You've been there less than a year and think you're already a vital cog in the machine?
We had a company here were the workers though they had bargaining power over the company they thought executives would care. So what did the executives do they immediately shut down the entire ware house and fired everyone lol.

You'd screw yourself over more than your boss. Unless you're the host of a popular talk show or an MVP quarterback, chances are they'd replace you a lot quicker than you'd find anything better.

In fact it's probably a favor to them if you quit. If they're offering promotions or pay increases after a certainly length of time, they'll get another employee and get to reset the clock with that person. Everybody thinks they're more important than they are and that they deserve more money no matter how much they make. Leaving a job you like before you have another one is a good way to get stuck with nothing or have to take something worse.
