Maybe it is not so irrational. I remember a psychiatrist talking about the fear of terror vs the fear of other dangerous situations, like getting killed in traffic which is far more likely. The reason why we are more afraid of terrorism is because the feeling and experience of somebody wanting to kill you, is very rare in our protected western lives, so when it happens it causes major trauma.Paying attention to news can instill all sorts of irrational things.
Just check the statistics in terms of how many people go to movies over a given year, vs how many people are killed in a movie theater shooting each year.
Unfortunately, politicians and others are all too aware of how irrational thoughts and emotions can be played upon to push whatever agenda they are working on, so we'll likely see the gun banning rhetoric ramp up for a bit like we do after most high profile shootings.
This is quite logical, imagine riding your bike and crashing. Imagine u get a concussion and three broken ribs. I doubt this will cause u any longterm emotional scarring. Then imagine two burglars breaking in to your house, and beating u with a baseball bat, the result is the same as the bike accident. Concussion and three broken ribs, the emotional scarring would be far worse.
So fear of terrorism and violence is actually not that irrational, even if the odds of being a victim is very low.
