im not actually complaining about kids today. They are growing up in a culture our generation created. But anyway, what fond childhood memories do you have that kids today don’t really or rarely get to experience (or just seem disinterested in).

Me:

I remember a regular summer day tradition was riding our bikes down to the Local Mom and Pop Pizza shop and ordering a slice then playing the one or two arcade games until we were out of quarters. I feel like that would be a boring day for a kid today.

A day at the laser tag/ arcade/ skate rink was pretty bomb in my day. Going to the water park. Riding our bmxs around the beach town where I lived. Going surfing. Hanging with a girl I was crushing on.

Being 12 and flirting with a “Tall, fit, athletic blonde/Female/19” in an AOL chatroom that was most likely a “Short, fat, balding/Male/44.”

Ha! Actually hanging out with her.

Yes, I remember spending a good 20 mins hyping myself up to actually call a girl I liked with some key talking points planned out should the call move to awkward silence.

And that uncomfortable feeling when the Dad would answer and you hear him handing off the phone “It’s for you. It’s some boy. You have 5 minutes then I want you off the phone.”

At least he let you talk.

I had a girl I’d call and her father would just yell at me :(

He knew my gay lil ass was comin :hmph

i dunno, kids today don't seem all that different from when i was a kid. they still do things like hang out at a place they like or think is cool, boy and girl dating drama, etc.

i think the thing they don't get to experience maybe as much is that life was just way easier when i was a kid in the 80s and 90s. there was no internet, no facebook or social media. you didn't have to worry about fuckin being made fun of online or going into school where everyone is laughing at you and you have no idea why. i came up with aol instant messenger and by the time that became really popular i was in 8th grade, but we didn't use it as a bullying tool or anything.

and the world at least just seems more dangerous. child predators, terrorism, violent protests, north korea. my friends kids always ask me questions when i go over their house (they know i know shit) and are always asking me is north korea going to hit us with a nuclear bomb. which i think a really sick and unethical media that likes to push narratives like that also make life a bit shittier for kids who have a harder time processing current events.

where as when i was a kid, cold war was over and we really had no threats. i remember the genocide in bosnia being a big deal, but the 90s was for the most part a really really peaceful time. then 9/11 hit and i remember that as sort of a fuckin wake up call, but i was in high school by then.

Being turned loose to go and do whatever you want on weekends and during the summer.

Also, I think it is much harder to get away with a fake ID these days.

A lot of kids love superheroes today, but have never owned or read a comic book.

Street fights without the risk of being filmed and put on YT/social media

Racial/sexual banters without offending anyone

I think much of what you say is right. The differences I think of are small in nature, but often relate to delay of gratification. Like, when I was a kid and I wanted to see a movie at home with some friends, we had to ride our skateboards down to the Hollywood video, then look around for 20-45 mins, and agree on something. Then we’d ride our skateboards to the local 7-11 and buy chips and jerky and sodas.

Today, a kid would just go on demand or the internet and have every movie ever instantly at his fingertips. And that convenience is fine, but I didn’t think of riding skateboards to the video store as inconvenient. That was a fun day with my friends.

Instead of staring at phones, we stood in driveways and told funny stories and made each other laugh non-stop. None of the jokes or stories were autistic you tube videos that weren't really funny.. So it was better.

Yeah, I was thinking when you had a sleepover at a friends house, sure there were video games, but that made up 10% of hanging out. Most of the time was spent just talking and joking and laughing and being bored together sometimes.

I played outside all day, everyday. I loved sports, riding horses, dirt bikes, ATV's. My friends and I used to sleep out in the woods by my house and get shit faced on alcohol and weed. We had a really nice fort made of tree's we had cut down( it looked like a miniature log cabin). When we turned 14-15 we started taking chicks out there and banging them on the reg. I loved being young and dumb with no social media, camera phones. fake news bullshit.

I remember being a kid. Every weekend me and my boys would hang out in Yugoslavia...kids today just don't know.

it’s been like that since they can watch the animated series on TV

Buying an album and listening to the whole thing.

hiding stolen porno mags in the woods

Omg this was some of the best stuff I did with my buddies when I was in 7th grade

Ride or bikes to the park and looked at porn together

The good ol days

Then we’d go swimming or something. Great times

I cant think of any fond memories from when I was a kid.
