It took a little longer than expected, but Khamzat Chimaev’s chance to vie for Ultimate Fighting Championship gold has arrived.

“Borz” will face reigning middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis in the UFC 319 headliner on Saturday at the United Center in Chicago. After beginning his promotional tenure at 170 pounds, Chimaev has found a home at middleweight.

The Chechen-born fighter took the MMA world by storm with a trio of dominant victories in 2020, and it seemed a lock that he would be fighting for a title in the near future. However, issues with health and making weight slowed Chimaev’s progress — though he has yet to suffer a defeat in eight UFC appearances thus far.

While Chimaev has a difficult task in front of him, he hasn’t ruled out a return to welterweight sometime in the future.

“I work with a new coach. I talk to him about going down again, back to my first fights at 170. He said if they give me a couple months, we’re gonna make it,” Chimaev told ESPN.

“This Australian guy [welterweight champ Jack Della Maddalena] would be a good fight for me. I go down, fight with him and could take the belt there.”

Della Maddalena is expected to make his first 170-pound title defense against ex-lightweight king Islam Makhachev in the near future. A date for that proposed bout has not been announced.

Chimaev also believes he is capable of moving up yet again and making waves in the light heavyweight division.

“If I go up, and there is [Magomed] Ankalaev and Alex Pereira — they are fighting now,” Chimaev said. “I can fight for that belt as well.”

What a coincidence, I have designs of becoming a 3 division UFC champ too.

He is obviously a skilled fighter and legit, but he is way too inactive, he needs to fight much more often, I'm worried if he is the champ that we are barely gonna get any title fights, which will be a big shame because MW is one of the very few divisions in UFC that has had active champions who fought a lot and quickly like Adesanya and Alex and DDP seems quite active so far. I just want to see the actual fights, not constant mysterious injuries and mysterious problems/issues as to why he can't fight, thats another reason I wanted Costa nowhere near the belt ever, it would be a disaster, Costa would come up with some reason as to why he can't fight.

Anyways regardless of that I want to see title defenses, and defend the belt against all the number 1 contenders, this zero title defenses and wanting a so called superfight next is so boring and lame now, its ruined so many divisions and the constant interim belts. Lets have some actual substance, as none of them are superfights when you haven't even reigned lol

Didn't Brandon Vera proclaim he was gonna be a multiple weight UFC champ. Misses his title shot against Silvia due to a contract dispute, then when he returns he promptly loses to former champ Silvia and finishes his UFC career going 4-8 with one of those loses being changed to a no contest after Thiago Silva falsified his urine sample.

Remember his interview before fighting Jon?
"Jon should be careful how he talks, he could get his face broken."
A lot of these guys don't understand the power of the spoken word...

With UFC's timeline and how they book him, he'll be 45 before he gets a shot at WW.

At the pace he's going, he probably has 4 fights until he ages out. He better get to work if he wants anything but his gym's title for training really hard.

Going back to 170 is not a good idea for Chimaev. If he plans on obtaining multiple belts if he wins the MW championship, his best bet would be to move up not down. His body won't allow him to fight at 170. That's why he moved to 185 to begin with.

After missing weight by 8,5 pounds 3 years ago, he suddenly will make weight after going to MW.

Like everybody already said <lol> <lol> <lol> <lol> <lol> <lol> <lol> <lol>
