Keosawa's Powerlifting Log

I saw that you posted something about this in one of the team logs, and remembered reading about it in one of my 5/3/1 books. Here is a quote from one of his books.

Question: Why don’t you recommend the use of chains and/or bands?

Answer: Accommodating resistances are a good idea on paper, but the practice has been popularized by strong individuals who all use equipment. The popularity of chains and bands has spread throughout the powerlifting world, and lifters have had great success with them. I’ve seen LOTS of athletes and regular lifters **** the bed with them, though, and this is for one main reason:

The strength curve for athletes/regular guys is heavy at the bottom and light at the top, so they need more low end work. The strength curve for geared lifters is light at the bottom and heavy at the top, so more high end work is needed.
Using chains/bands on a raw lifter will lower the use of bar weight and THUS lower the amount of weight that’s used at the bottom of a lift. Hence, the strength curve is all screwed up and not always suited for a raw lifter."

Seems like you guys have some pretty different views on the subject. Obviously it has worked for you. You think he is just blowing smoke up peoples ass trying to sell his book?

Oh yeah, your man boobs are looking swolt.

Question: Why don

(Sorry about the lousy audio! I forgot to mix it before producing this.)

Squat:
Barx5
135x1
225x1
315x1
405x1
480x1

Paused Bench Press
Barx5
95x1
135x1
185x1
225x1
250x1
270x1

I worked up to an opener on bench and a planned second attempt on squat, and both felt pretty good. I actually ended up squatting and bench pressing a combined nine pounds less than the numbers I finished with in July (750 to 759), and I didn't really break a sweat on these.

So, anyway, good stuff! My weight's looking pretty solid right now and I'm feeling pretty good. Now, it's time to wait until Saturday.

I don't think he's blowing smoke, but I do not agree for the following reasons:

nice read! I was wondering, is this the same as saying that you need to be explosive in the bottom to get past your sticking point? Let's say for my squat, if i usually fail about 3 inches from the bottom of the lift, if i accelarate really fast from the bottom then there is a good chance that momentum will help me get past my sticking point. Am i getting this right?

Yes, exactly. For me, determining the issue is intuitive and depends upon an intuitive reading of one's strength curve. If you rocket out of the hole and hit a wall, you need to address your sticking point with some bottom-end training. But if you come out slowly and only slow down, you're not giving yourself a chance to complete the lift by not producing enough bar-speed.

Have you ever thought about doing a Q&A ? You're strong, you're obviously knowledgeable. Personally I'd love an "Ask Keo" thread.

Sure, I'd be happy to, if someone were to set it up and run it.

That's your cue belph.

Kyle, that squat looked really awesome!

lol. If there interest is there, I'd do it, sure. But I'm not going to assume that people want to ask me questions unless, well, the interest is there. Starting your own Q&A is like nominating yourself for an award.

And thanks! It felt pretty solid. I think I have a run at 502 in me now.

Thanks, guys!

Really quickly: my weight after a 7pm dinner last night was 156.4; this morning, I weighed 150.4. My weight class is 148.7, and so I'm less than two pounds away. I'll go to school and teach my class, and at around 11:30, I'll head to the CRWC to cut enough weight to be on weight for the meet. I'm guessing this weight will float off anyway, but I'll get myself on target early and consume a few calories, just like I did last time.

So, another easy weight cut will be done in about twelve hours.

Good luck at the meet man. Im sure you'll do great!

Good luck keo, waiting to see your results. I will have to pick your mind to fix my deadlift if possible
