I said I'd swing by, then forgot to do so.

So here I am! Lifts look strong, especially that 485 sumo and 370x7 squat. Both are lifts I'm hoping to get going after once I drop a few pounds.

How do you think short legs and a short body do for sumo DL's? I'm 5'6 and my legs and upper body are fairly proportionate, so it always seemed awkward to pull sump for me. Opinions?

did you go straight to 485 sumo? thats awesome right after squats too, and then hit a PR rep in squats after good stuff

This isn't an exact science by any means, but it will give you some insight into how your body type might respond to sumo. In my personal opinion, sumo is more the "default" deadlift style than conventional, in that more people can reach a respectable level pulling sumo than conventional, and that it's not quite as leverage-dependent a pulling style as conventional is. In other words, I think sumo style is a viable option for anyone; if you've got short arms, then sumo will likely work better than conventional, and if you've got long arms, you might be better suited for a conventional pull, but it's not like you're at a biomechanical disadvantage when pulling sumo.

Thanks man. And yeah, I liked the first episode too. It's certainly grown on me.

I like sumo. I struggle with the technique and I'm not disciplined enough to focus on it sometimes, but it's easier to prepare for mentally and execute than conventional. I think part of that just has to do with differences in typical strength curves in the conventional and the sumo deadlift: for most of us long-armed guys, conventional pulling, especially with a close stance, comes off the floor fast and is a struggle at the top, whereas breaking the weight off the floor is the hardest part of sumo, while the lockout is usually pretty easy. With the sumo, you can almost ease into the lift, whereas I've found with conventional I can't.

Yes, I went straight to it. Someone I knew had 485 set up on the bar, and he was watching our squats before he attempted it. I had just done 350 for my squats and figured I'd give it a whirl. It wasn't my smartest moment, but what the hell; sometimes you have to have a little fun.

hows your foot position in the sumo? ive heard you want your feet forward but ive never seen anyone do that, usually quite angled out...

Mine are angled way out. People with great hip mobility and abductor/adductor strength will point their toes close to forward and have great success with it. You see this a lot also with good wide-stance squatters. For whatever reason, I don't have the strength necessary to do this yet.
 
I've had deadlifting woes in the past, so I plan on trying to max on sumo this Thursday and if it is better than my conventional I will obviously switch to it.

In your opinion, would you consider switching if it was even close to my conventional, since I had never sumo deadlfted until last Thursday and have been pulling conventional for about 10 months now?

If it's close, you could probably make the case that your ceiling is higher in sumo. But honestly, it's not like you'd have to pick and choose; you'll always have an opportunity to use both styles, and to be honest, most good sumo pullers that I see also mix in some occasional conventional deadlifting anyway (though the inverse isn't often true).

Well hopefully I'll go in there and pull a +25 PR and it won't even matter.

I would argue that you should learn to pull conventional with good technique before you consider dumping it.

Nice volume. As far as pulling, I'm enjoying training sumo alongside conventional. It's definitely more on the hips, less back for sumo.
 


The quality on this video sucks; I'm still learning how to get my new camera to play nice with my editing software.

Notice how my partner tried actively to sabotage my workout--and my filming--because I always beat him in the rep work we do at the end.

They're neoprene elbow sleeves.

And I think that's when it will end, but that's not entirely my decision to make, I suppose. Fate will take its course.
