Keo, ever think about packing on mass and strength and going up to 165? I imagine you'd be elite-level strong at 165
Well, the old Elite total for 165 was 1298 (now, it's a little lower), so I have the ability to total Elite at 165. And yes, I've thought about it, but there are several reasons why I'm not planning an impending move to 165.
First, my numbers continue to improve. Though my deadlift goes up at a snail's pace, I think I've finally turned the corner with my bench press, and my squat has climbed by about 5 pounds per month over the last year. To give you an idea of how much I've improved at this bodyweight, last year I tested at an 1155 total (while leaving a little in the tank on the deadlift) during my max-test week and totaled 1202 at my first meet at 148 lbs. This year, I tested at a 1300 total (up 60 lbs. in the squat, 20 lbs. in the bench press, and 65 lbs. in the deadlift), and I have a chance at totaling 1300+ at my next meet.
I'm not getting bigger for my weight class, either. Between last year and this year, I'm probably five pounds thinner. My body composition has continued to change--my physique is becoming closer and closer to what I want it to be in order to perform optimally--and my weight cuts have been progressively easier.
Simply put, I'm still getting stronger at 148 lbs. Now, would I get stronger at a faster rate at 165 lbs.? Certainly, but my Wilks would initially take a bit of a hit. As long as I continue to make 148 lbs. and improve upon my total at a regular rate--if I total 1300 at my next week, I'll continue an average growth of 25 lbs. on my meet total per three months (1202 to 1226 to 1251 to 1300+). I feel like that's great growth, and if I somehow were to sustain it, I'd be among the best 148 pounders in the world in another year. I don't think that will happen--totaling 1400 next year would be amazing, but I have to be realistic about the fact that my gains will likely soon start diminishing--but it's a possibility.
Furthermore, the competition at 165 is really stiff; in my opinion, it's one of the toughest weight classes in American powerlifting, along with 220 and 275. To break into the top 10, I'd need to total near 1400, and that's not something I'm capable of doing yet. I like to consider myself one of the best in my country at my weight class, and I know I need a lot of work before I can claim a spot that high at 165 lbs. After being as high as fifth at 148--and I could possibly move up to third if I break 1300 in April--I would have to climb back up the rankings at 165.
