Keosawa's Powerlifting Log

I might even be able to snap some pictures and get them up near-live too. If Keo lets me. I'm sort of a picture freak.

Effective, probably; isometric holds in general are "effective," though I don't think you'd build really strong abdominals just through isometrics. However, I don't know enough about the subject to give a good answer.

Thanks man, appreciate it. I just remember thinking about it one day cause loading planks by yourself can be a pain after a while.

Mmajester, yes, we could see about me posting in this alternate thread; I'll post wherever Keo wants. Are you going to be at this particular meet, or are you attending a different one on that day?

Na I'm doing one in Kentucky the same day, just figured I'll start an alternative log so you won't fill up 10-15 pages of just meet chit chat

Keo, ever think about packing on mass and strength and going up to 165? I imagine you'd be elite-level strong at 165

Well, the old Elite total for 165 was 1298 (now, it's a little lower), so I have the ability to total Elite at 165. And yes, I've thought about it, but there are several reasons why I'm not planning an impending move to 165.

First, my numbers continue to improve. Though my deadlift goes up at a snail's pace, I think I've finally turned the corner with my bench press, and my squat has climbed by about 5 pounds per month over the last year. To give you an idea of how much I've improved at this bodyweight, last year I tested at an 1155 total (while leaving a little in the tank on the deadlift) during my max-test week and totaled 1202 at my first meet at 148 lbs. This year, I tested at a 1300 total (up 60 lbs. in the squat, 20 lbs. in the bench press, and 65 lbs. in the deadlift), and I have a chance at totaling 1300+ at my next meet.

I'm not getting bigger for my weight class, either. Between last year and this year, I'm probably five pounds thinner. My body composition has continued to change--my physique is becoming closer and closer to what I want it to be in order to perform optimally--and my weight cuts have been progressively easier.

Simply put, I'm still getting stronger at 148 lbs. Now, would I get stronger at a faster rate at 165 lbs.? Certainly, but my Wilks would initially take a bit of a hit. As long as I continue to make 148 lbs. and improve upon my total at a regular rate--if I total 1300 at my next week, I'll continue an average growth of 25 lbs. on my meet total per three months (1202 to 1226 to 1251 to 1300+). I feel like that's great growth, and if I somehow were to sustain it, I'd be among the best 148 pounders in the world in another year. I don't think that will happen--totaling 1400 next year would be amazing, but I have to be realistic about the fact that my gains will likely soon start diminishing--but it's a possibility.

Furthermore, the competition at 165 is really stiff; in my opinion, it's one of the toughest weight classes in American powerlifting, along with 220 and 275. To break into the top 10, I'd need to total near 1400, and that's not something I'm capable of doing yet. I like to consider myself one of the best in my country at my weight class, and I know I need a lot of work before I can claim a spot that high at 165 lbs. After being as high as fifth at 148--and I could possibly move up to third if I break 1300 in April--I would have to climb back up the rankings at 165.

I see I see. I completely agree, I think besides 220, 165 is the toughest weight class for raw and or geared powerlifting. It's really crazy that your total is rising at such a steady pace. Thanks for the response, always a fan of your philosophies.

I was completely exhausted after this training session; I think the 375x9 really took it out of me. Still, that's a rep PR and more progress. My knee wraps felt great today and I experienced no discomfort.

No problem. I'm not afraid of the competition at 165, but as long as my lifts continue to improve and I don't grow too big for the division, I will stay at 148 and try to improve my standing here. My ranking is more important to me than my total, so that's what I'm trying to uphold.

You squatted my planned third attempt 9 times. FML.

Out of curiosity how would you rank the competitiveness of the different weight classes in powerlifting?

A year ago, I finished my first meet of the year with a 386 squat. So, I squatted a little under my best attempt from a year ago for a set of nine, which shows how quickly these lifts can improve.

I can only speak from American powerlifting, but I would say that 220 is the best raw weight class overall, followed very closely by 275, which has three of the best raw lifters in the world in Efferding, Lilliebridge, and Tuchscherer. 165 for me is third, and SHW might be fourth, because it's got seven 2000-lb. total guys and a few big names (Siders, Gillingham, Beau Moore). 132, 148, and 181 are all somewhere in the middle, for very different reasons. 132 is extremely thin, but it has two of the best three 132-lb. lifters in the world. 148 is not quite as thin and benefits from having Tony Conyers at the top, but it's still probably the third-weakest weight class. 181 is pretty deep and talent-rich, but there are no superstars in it. 242 is considerably weaker than 220 and has no real stars, and 308 is pretty lousy. I'd rank them:

220
275
165
SHW
132
181
198
148
242
308

Yes, fifth. I have an outside chance at moving into the top three, but #1 and #2 have totals in the 1400s, which will take me a considerable amount of time to reach.

You're never going to be higher than the seventh-ranked bodybuilder with that attitude.

What advice would you give someone that's around 228-229 and wants to weigh in at
220 in 10 days?

I got myself as low as 226.8 but I had a bad week this last week and went up a few pounds

Just concerned about my lack of knowledge hurting my strength

Thanks Keo
