Katsidis v Casamayor

casamayor really punched his ticket to the hof, masterful performance; shows excellent boxing skills/ring generalship and toughness, mental/physical.

really beat a young determined and dominating young fighter; he is a little rough round the edges, but he was good and tough enough to beat anyone in the div. He just won't beat campbell/casamayor; but he is young enough to wait them out.
How can you say he won't beat Casamayor when he almost had him out of there in the 6th? Give him 10 more secs and the ref would have stopped the fight.

yeah and had zab judah been able to follow up on his shots he would have stopped cotto and had torres had a little more time he finishes cotto or if not for the long count then tyson beats douglas and whatnot.

i see ur point, but i don't think he won't; he got to him in the six and let him off the hook, all that means is he took too long in fig out and getting to joel; had he done it ten seconds earlier then he wins..

casamayor didn't need ten more and the best guys often don't he got his full measure, came back, positioned him and put him out w/time to spare...that is how the vets do it. An if joel was 1-2 yrs younger it wouldn't have gone that long, only reason its this competitive is ring rust and age; people don't get how tough/good and durable casa is....

I wonder why Katsidis stopped going to the body around the 7th round. Casa was able to get back into a rhythm at that point.

Casa proved in the first that Katsidis was gonna have to be careful in launching his rights. Katsidis seemed to forget about that going into the 9th. I wonder if he was frustrated by the previous 2 rounds and just decided to go for broke in the 9th and try to decide the fight then and there. He got really careless and paid the price.

Good points.

Incredible fight.

Wow, Katsidis is one of my favourite fighters.

Puts on a great show against Amongsot and now Casamayor.

Wish he would have pulled it out but he showed tonight how raw he is.

That fight reminded me why I was a Casamayor fan. The long layoff and then terrible performance against Cruz had me calling for his retirement.

That was a great fight.

Casamayor really showed some great skills in the ring against a very dangerous, hungry Kastidis. Skills and experience really made a big difference in the fight.

Totally agreed. Katsidis was breaking him down quickly once he went downstairs, then started headhunting again. Fatal error.

I have always despised Casamayor. Typically, he's all about showboating, holding, headbutts and gift decisions. But this was an impressive performance. He SHOULD have lost this fight, but he sucked it up and found a way to win. Can't take that away from him.

Liked Katsidis' attitude in the post-fight interview. He knew he had made a mental mistake (if not a series of them), and seemed to accept that the only way to learn the lesson is to get his ass kicked. As usual, he fought his balls off. Love that guy. He'll be back. And smarter.

I don't know the exact words but during the post fight interview Casamayor said that Katsidis wasn't a hard puncher. He went on to say that he never got hurt by any of Katsidis' punches. He only slipped out of the ring.

From my view I felt that he got hurt bad by the body shot and fell out of the ropes. Then took about a good 30 seconds to get up and climb back into the ring.

Thats how I saw it. Killer body shot and and then a few follow ups to the head, but the body punch did the damage to Casamayor.

What a great fight. Not sure how popular Katsidis is Australia, but maybe a rematch there could give Joel the payday he's looking for.

Im not sure I understand what's happening with the WBC and WBO titles at lightweight but I imagine that if Amir Khan wins his next fight he may be the the WBO's number 1 which could provide a payday for Joel.

What a fucking fight. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and I thought Katsidis had him when he put him through the ropes, but as much as I hate to say it, I gotta give credit to Casa...he gutted it out and took some serious punishment in the middle rounds, then turned it on when he sensed Katsidis was getting sloppy. Beautiful left hook right on the button...the way he fell was textbook.

Well this makes things easy. We can still see Diaz vs. Katsidis. They can put it on the undercard of Campbell vs Casamayor.

I was away over the weekend so I didn't have time to make the official fight thread, but I did want to highlight some of the undercard. Danny Jacobs got yet another 1st round KO, he's just 21 and a beast at middleweight and will make waves in a year, keep you eyes on him.

Unbeaten IBF #12 junior lightweight Billy Dib (18-0, 9 KOs) won a narrow split decision over Edgar Vargas (11-4, 1 KO). Scorecards were 95-94, 95-94 Dib, 95-94 Vargas.

Referee David Mendoza deducted a point from Dib in round five for a low blow.Featherweight Carlos Velasquez (7-0, 6 KOs) went the distance for the first time, taking a six round unanimous decision over veteran Manuel Sarabia (16-23-9, 9 KOs) 60-54, 60-54, 59-55.

Featherweight Juan Velasquez (7-0, 4 KOs) pounded out a unanimous nod over Tomas Bernal (3-6, 2 KOs) by scores of 40-36 across the board.

Middleweight prospect Daniel Jacobs (4-0, 4 KOs) dropped Matt Palmer (2-2) twice before the bout was stopped at 2:43 of round one.

that was my thought- why did he stop going to the body, where he was having great success.

that, and another odd thing was, with 5 rounds to go, his corner told him only 4 more rounds... later, going out in the 10th, i thought i heard him or the corner talk about ti being the 11th. i wonder if they lost track of the round and thus him rocketing out of the corner like he had a serious case of the runs to start that last round..

I think he was getting frustrated. If you watch closelyu, you can see Casamayor was schooling him before the KO. He was landing little shots and easily avoiding most of Katsidis' punches. In fact, I think it was his overconfidence that got him caught a few times.

It wasa fun to see Casamayor throwing his head out there. How does he get away with that shit?
