Kanye West has been red pilled

Now go listen to some Eric Dolphy and come back and apologize for putting Kanye’s name in the same universe as the word genius.

Start at 40 seconds

This was very good, incredible at times actually. If I were to attach the word 'genius' to this it would be in reference to the technical ability being shown here. These guys are very good at playing these instruments. The composition is also great.

The reason I called 2 of Kanye's albums genius it was in reference to the artistic aspect of the music. I'm talking about a combination of musical composition, production, melodies, harmonies, and lyrics that all work together to create a story, paint a picture, or capture an idea that grabs you rhythmically, intellectually, and emotionally.

Comparing Kanye West and Eric Dolphy is kind of apples and oranges.

It’s not, it’s comparing genius, to a borderline talented person.

Do you know how easy it is to produce modern music, especially hip hop? I could quite literally make a more fire beat than 99% of so called “producers” in 20 minutes.

Melodic content? Nursery rhyme level.

Harmony? Practically non existent

Rhythm? Played by a drum machine.

I don’t think you know anything about music, not to offend. Please take my word for it, he barely qualifies as talented.

And as someone who’s not a rap fan, but lived through 1997, he couldn’t hold biggies sandwich.

PS, that Dolphy clip isn’t composition, he’s improvising that, iow making it up on the spot. Oh, and he’s also virtuosic on sax and flute. Again that’s what a real genius looks like.

I don't think you are actually reading what I'm saying. I am not calling his albums genius because they are showcasing the most high level rhymes, or the most complex harmony, or the most technical instrument playing(or any at all). I am referring to the artistic, and innovative way he used those elements to create music complex, has depth, and is all around great.

Now, whether or not you like the rhymes, harmony, rhythm...or have even listened to it is another story. But at least understand what I'm talking about.

It also helps if you have an appreciation, knowledge, and understanding of hip hop to get what I'm saying.

I’ve produced rap albums, tracked numerous rappers, and taught music production. I’m also a classically trained musician, and a jazz player.

Trust me, I know what I’m talking about.

You digging it, has zero bearing on whether or not something is genius.

Not meaning to offend here, but people need a reality check on what genius is. It’s like calling your 7th grade math teacher a genius. That being said, I’m fine with labeling him an artist.

I've heard stories of how Dolphy would be annoyed by people talking in clubs during his performances and start mimicking their cadence in his solos to mock them.

No you couldnt

Yes, yes I could.

Fire up daw.
Open spark (drum machine), choose a drum beat, tweak
Create a piano track, play Cm Fm Bb Eb Fm F#dim G Cm
Loop that
Create bass track, play all root notes to those chords, use alternating quarter note, 2 eight notes
Create track, make a melody

1,234,4,565,4,b3,2,2 b3 1

Add track, copy piano midi to a string sound for a pad, have that come in on the hook.

Done.

Play it yourself. Fire.

*sigh*

Again, I'm not talking about anything technical. I'm talking about artistic. Unless you are a classically trained judge of art none of those credentials mean much.

But since you brought it up. Explain, if you could, what you are talking about when you call something genius. What was genius exactly about Eric Dolphy's performance here? And are there any hip hop albums you would consider genius or even just great?

You don't seem to understand that a large part of music is...taste. You thinking your beat is more fire than all others doesn't make it so.

And as someone who’s not a rap fan, but lived through 1997, he couldn’t hold biggies sandwich.

Well yeah, Biggie is the better straight up rapper/lyricist but Kanye is the better song writer. Biggie could write songs as well but not as good as Kanye. Kanye as a writer is a way more mature and complete than Biggie ever got to be.

But as a straight up rapper...yeah Biggie's one of the best.

Perhaps you missed my last sentence, I may have edited it.

I respect him as an artist. He’s done great for himself. Not being a hater, just giving a reality check.

I’m not sure I would classify any rap/rock/country as genius, though some come close (off the top of my head, the wall, sgt peppers). And are great, classic albums. But Bach they are not. Though there are musicians involved in those records who may be genius level.

Ok rap. I’d have to credit earlier artists because the genre has become so formulaic. The folks that blazed the trail deserve more credit. As far as who’s the top of the crop, biggie, wu tang honorable mention cuz they’re hood as fuck.

Dolphy? I could literally write you a book based on that single solo. Let’s just say that to reach a virtuosic level on multiple instruments, forge a legitimately new voice, and basically introduce an entire new instrument (bass clarinet) and it’s vocab to the jazz ensemble, qualifies as genius.

Go play exactly what I wrote on a keyboard, tell me if you like it.

Kanye uses ghost producers and ghost writers. For God's sake Nick Cannon has written for Kanye. Most overrated "producer" ever.

Ding ding, we have a winner.

Making records is a lot like making sausage. You really don’t want to know what goes into it, but in the end, it tastes pretty good.

Has Kanye ever made a song where he wasn't sampling someone else's work?

Well I definitely wouldn't argue that anything Kanye has done musically is more impressive than what you write here about Dolphy. I also wouldn't compare any modern musician to that of Bach and other classical musicians. But again I still think were talking apples and oranges.

I just appreciate the cinematic, substantive, and rhythmic experience those albums of Kanye takes you through. Is he doing anything as technical, complex, or even talented as high level musicians? No. But the substance here isn't, and wasn't meant to be, the technical and complex application of music. It's just a piece of art that same appreciate more than others I guess.

I rarely experience anything as satisfying as someone on the internet bumping into an actual subject matter expert and then continuing to argue the point with said expert.

Yeah bro, I had a Thomas the tank engine set as a kid, I can definitely design your intra city railway system
