I don't think that conservatives calling Democrats baby killers or queers or calling someone like me a terrorist is even the problem. We can all each other all sorts of names but at the end of the day if we can accept free and fair elections we can just run it back again four years later. But if we can't accept electoral losses and indeed endeavor to overturn them the system starts to breakdown.

Yeah, I'm saying that the debate and scream were overrated as factors. So generally, debates (or one-off moments like that) don't matter at all, but when you're trying to find an exception to the rule, you end up with something much more complicated than the pat story that people tell when explaining the moment. You might realize that Dean was already collapsing when he screamed, but I see others who have the temporal relationship backward.

I agree that Trump somehow seems to be impervious to things that should doom him and would doom other candidates. Candidates need to be made to face questions about their policies, how they’ll work, how they’ll be implemented, what they’ll cost and how they’ll pay for them—and they need to be challenged on this by their opponents in real time.

Why, though? That has no relationship to the actual job of president.

It wouldn’t surprise me if in the future that faded away, and it was 100% media messaging and scripted speeches all the time. We shouldn’t want that to happen, we should support the idea of debate and making candidates debate.

Obviously I wouldn't want a president speaking like that and note that at that level its pretty much all comes from one side. But average Americans and content creators should feel free to engage in boisterous and even offensive language within the confines of our democratic norms. Violating those norms, the way Trump and his movement have, is to me a far greater threat to our democratic way of life and largely responsible for ratcheting up the tensions.
