I've been watching the commentariat lately and it's shocking how quickly the leftists came into lockstep over Kamala. People that a few months ago would call her an idiot are now singing the praise. It's such an astroturfing operation going on at the moment, and the purpose is probably to brute-force any dissenting internal voices into silence. It's even more desperate astorturfing than i've seen for "pokemon go to the polls" Hillary.

It's understandable, and it's done for Democrats - time is running out and the operation is "convince every democrat they love kamala, and that they ALWAYS loved kamala". LOOK AT THIS REUTERS POLL! The cringe will probably reach full screaming pitch around Convention time, and about a few weeks after that you will have the real polls, which are the target of the current astroturf.

I’m eerily similar to her. I’m 1/2 Caribbean (mostly African decent Puerto Rican). I’m 1/4 middle eastern (Syrian / Lebanese combo) and 1/4 southern European / European mix (Portuguese Greek mix with a little Scottish). Like her I went to a mainly black college for my undergrad Florida A&M (major in CJ / sociology minor pre law). Post grad regular.

Unlike her I’m married to a black woman extended my family further into black culture (she’s married to a rich white guy) and I have black children and a predominantly black / Puerto Rican on both sides in terms of sheer numbers. I do a lot of volunteer work and advocacy (specifically with minority run small businesses) within the community itself. I work in commercial real estate.

I been a democrat my entire life but I’m not indoctrinated and I look at everything case by case issue by issue. I’m not fist pumping for Kamala as the candidate personally.

We all saw Trump's speech yesterday and he couldn't really think of much to attack Kamala with besides the border lol. He rambled on and on for probably 5+ minutes about his crowd sizes again because his material was dry.

Going to be interesting to see how Trump tries to attack a candidate who's not a vegetable. So far he's 0/1 and came across pretty poorly.

JD Vance also 0/1 after everyone watched his mountain dew joke get no reaction as he laughed at his own joke. Since Biden dropped out, Vance and Trump have started oozing that Ron Desantis tiny dick energy.

I don't really buy the narrative about Carter and Reagan. And generally, I think there is a tendency for people, when telling the story of a race, to compress it into significant moment.

The debate was the only one they had, and occurred in the final week before the election. It was an election in which the two candidate were polling closely, and the debate moment in question specifically had to do with the question of whether Americans were better off than they were when Carter was elected.
That debate had an audience of 80 million people. I thin k it was clearly impactful.

Another big one on that is the "Dean scream," which was actually meaningless but is a good hook for the story of Dean's fall. The whole reason he was so desperate was a disastrous showing and signs that his campaign was imploding. Similarly, Biden was a little behind going into the debate, as people had concerns about his age, and the thinking was that as in 2020 and the SOTU(s), he would shut critics down. So even though he wasn't far behind, his poor performance had people thinking he wouldn't be able to close the small amount of ground he needed to (and then the doubts became a self-fulfilling prophecy, as losing supporters dooms you). So as you acknowledge, it was somewhat unusual (in terms of a debate mattering more than normal), but also part of a much broader story.

What you say of Biden is true of the Dean Scream too though: it wasn’t the scream itself, it fed into a larger narrative. Not that Dean was ever going to win anyway, but again I think the moment made a difference.

That's where we might have the biggest disagreement. I have no doubt that Vivek could be slick and make Trump look bad if he wanted to, but while I can't imagine he'd be a worse president than Trump, that wouldn't really have any bearing on the issue in reality.

I agree that Trump somehow seems to be impervious to things that should doom him and would doom other candidates. Candidates need to be made to face questions about their policies, how they’ll work, how they’ll be implemented, what they’ll cost and how they’ll pay for them—and they need to be challenged on this by their opponents in real time.

It wouldn’t surprise me if in the future that faded away, and it was 100% media messaging and scripted speeches all the time. We shouldn’t want that to happen, we should support the idea of debate and making candidates debate.
