I had a great time refereeing a tournament today, but I noticed something that bothers me. It should be illegal. Here me out.
Jumping guard should also be illegal. Since moving to Southern California, I've seen many more people jumping guard. A worrying number of them are hurting their back or their head if they hit the ground violently during the jump. Others get slammed when the other competitor can't support their weight. It's already considered a takedown in the IBJJF in certain circumstances. Butt scooting is already illegal, as it should be.
This should not be confused with pulling guard (pulling the guy to the ground). That can be a legit technique. You can control your impact with the mat, which is especially useful if you are already hurt. (Believe me, I just hurt my knuckle badly by hand fighting while going for a takedown recently... I should've just pulled guard and been more careful before the pans. Still competing though.) It controls where the fight takes place, and allows you to fight where you're best.
Granted most of the injuries seem to be occurring among children and smaller competitors. However, aren't these the ones we should protect the most? I feel jumping onto a guy without trying to pull him to the mat shouldn't be allowed. It's already illegal at the Gracie Nationals (which allows knee reaps for black belt competitors IIRC). I feel jumping guard should be banned across the board.
