Judo techniques: Why don't they beat wrestlers?



A 54kg (119 lbs) Greco-Roman Junior World champ, 20 years removed from his greatest victory vs Karo Parisyan, many time US Junior National champion in Judo and a Junior Pan American silver medalist, who fights primarily at 170 lbs or 77 kg.

The guy is obviously skilled but c'mon, that was as close as a real match as is the wrestler is to 119 lbs still.

You'll note the lack of gis, and frankly Karo was never that good on an international level. Still fun to watch though.

club scene as well. I mean, lack of commitment for osoto at 2 mins and 2 ippons otherwise seems kinda odd.

It's true Judo takes a lot more time to transition, and arguably more time to learn period. It could be as bad as a berimbolo specialist transitioning to MMA.

I do Judo because it's a beautiful art as well as sport. If I was coaching someone who had to cross train with no standup experience, I'd tell him to go wrestle too.

That said, someone who has done years of Judo can still mix it up as well as anybody. You get someone like Fedor or Ronda where people have a hard time shutting down their game because they are so well rounded.

However Judo by design requires a lot of risk taking back exposure. The Japanese wanted to cultivate a do or die mentality. It's not going to work unless you are really good, and throws really count without any soft mats.

All due respect Qing, I don't believe that. I've had 2 judo sensei that went on to wrestling in the olys and guys as recent as Canadian judo champ Nick Tritton that went point a-b judo to wrestling and he won nats in both as well.

That's kind of what bothers me about judoka, they're so something sometimes. It has to be the numbers. Numbers don't mean anything. I'm sure in France a judoka meets the occasional tuff wrestler. French judoka can't make a call on this. Ditto here.

Who do you know who started in judo but ended up going to the Olympics in wrestling?
 


Jesse Taylor, (2003 JUCO All-American 184 lbs) dominating a 2001 Judo World Bronze Medalist, Yoon Dong-Sik using Folkstyle wrestling and positional control. Dong was considered the king without a crowd of judo because he was won everything but the worlds multiple times.

Michael Chandler (2009 157 lb Division 1 All-American Folkstyle - 5th place) vs Rick Hawn, 2004 Judo Olympian (9th place, 81 kg = 198 lbs) and 2007 Bronze medalist at Pan Ams (81 kg) and 9th place at World Cup (90 kg = 198 lbs)

Notice how easily the folkstyle wrestler dominates the judoka in takedowns and grappling, a judoka who competed at an international level and at a much higher weight category.. This is what I expect when I see a top folkstyle wrestler against a top Judoka who isn't a physical freak or a multiple time world champion

Many, (it's numerous SFC) but sensei I worked with were...

Pat Bolger. He was Canadian champ in judo several years before joining wresting. Fought both winning the silver at the Pan-ams in both judo and wrestling, same year, same weight. He qualified for the olys in both sports and chose wresting "due to getting more local comp". Calls himself a judoka first and foremost.

Mike Barry, 6x Canadian judo champ went to wrestling and fought the olys. Calls himself a judoka first and foremost.


that's 2. Another that was wrestling 1st (nat medalist) was Kelvin Proctor. Went on to win Judo (nat medalist). Didn't say he was a judoka 1st and foremost but still teaches it.

Ray and brother Phil (Takahashi's) Ray went free olys and Phil went judo olys.

Many more...


Just like your fella fom Florida, he was huge judo, then wrestling and was called otherwise.lol. Nobody makes it going the other way. Not close compared.lol

Not just the Olympians but evry judoka of decency I know that has entered wrestling.

Oh, Mitch Kawasaki was and still is huge judo, he went Greco Olys.

Rhadi Ferguson stopped doing Judo when he was a child (12 years old), switched to wrestling, and then wrestled in college where he was a D1 Conference Champion apparently. He became an Olympian in Judo afterwards.

You live in a country with a historically weak wrestling team.

Canada has not produced any men who have medaled in the worlds or olympics in a very long time. Siassouri and Igali were foreign imports. Jeffrey Thue appears to be the last medalist (1992) aside from them.

I don't discount the wrestling accomplishments of your senseis but it seems like all of them were 1984 or earlier. Doing well in the Olympics in the 60s and 70s is great but its not as relevant as recent competition. I have no idea how hard it was to qualify or if it was different back then.

Have there been any recent Canadian Judokas who have competed in wrestling?
