Rampage had tons of losses by then and hadnt finished anyone in years. Aspinall is significantly bigger and 7 of his 8 UFC wins are in the first round.
Also Jon was a young man with no real legacy to protect yet, compared to now where hes about to turn 38, is years past his prime and has managed to go 17 years without being KTFO or tapped.
The risk/reward of fighting Tom is way worse for him.
I hear you and I get where you're coming from—I actually agree with most of what you said.
What I meant was that at 23 years old, with limited experience, Jones was scheduled to fight a guy who, despite having a few losses, was still seen as an intimidating figure. Back then, Rampage had an aura that was genuinely terrifying, and I think that weighed more heavily on Jones at that point.
And I totally agree with you about him turning 38—he’s definitely aware of that, and I’m sure he knows it’s going to be a tough fight. Jones is a narcissist, so of course, his legacy means everything to him.
That’s probably why he asked for six months and demanded such a big payday. The UFC gave him both, and I’m 100% sure we’ll see them fight at MSG. Honestly, the UFC can’t drop the ball on this one. They already missed out on Francis vs. Jones—they just can’t afford to let this fight slip, especially with the current lack of big-name matchups.
It makes total sense to give him the time he needs and just pay the man before he rides off into the sunset. This fight has the potential to break all records for gate revenue and PPV sales. It could be absolutely massive.
A narcissist-slash-sociopath like Jones isn’t just going to retire after months of parading the belt around while people call him a coward. That’s just not how narcissists—and especially sociopaths—operate.
