Jones Gane physique comparison

We Pennsylvanians love our wrestling.
I only followed it casually until about 2012. But when I got my purple belt in Jiu-Jitsu, I started caring a LOT more about wrestling. Training it, following it and studying it.
The Dagestani invasion of MMA has been such a treat for me.

You must be psyched that Roman Bravo Young signed with an Mma management team. The word is after this last year he's going into MMA instead of pursuing the Olympics.

Dagestani invasion is great but people sensationalize it a bit too much. The blend of upper and lower body attacks is hugely relevant for cage wrestling though. Also having a grappling base from Sambo ontop of their takedown oriented strengths is great, a lot of freestyle wrestlers are great at scoring takedowns but their control and grappling game sucks. It's super complete grappling that's fairly optimized for MMA but definitely overhyped too, I think. We really haven't even see Khabib, Islam, Umar or Usman fight a good American wrestler yet (unless you count Gaethje and considering how little it's a part of his fighting game and his suspect gas tank I don't consider Gaethje). I'd like to see some good American wrestling prospects again mix it up with the Caucasian fellas.

Most guys who train for strength still look like they actually lift though - Martin Berkham for example. Jon literally looks like he's never lifted a weight in his life.
Don't be silly. No one is looking at that photo and thinking this is a man who has never lifted weights in his life.

Sherdog, you never cease to amaze me.

Starting to think Jones is just there for one last payday. He looks like shit and he's trying with cans like Walt Harris and Maurice Green

That's probably every team though. What team has more than one elite HW. Most don't even have one.

This was a bad idea by Jones. It will not end well

Meh, I’m a Jones hater but comparing physiques does not correlate to who is a better fighter. Look at boxing for example - Ruiz/Joshua and Fury/Wilder. I’m know MMA is different, but I think the point is still valid…

Jones looks like he can hit 205 just by eating clean for a month and dropping some water before the weigh in.

What exactly is he moving up for?

Seems to look good to me

Jon Jones has skinny thighs as well. His entire leg is skinny and he is naturally thin boned. Skinny thighs and calves are more vulnerable to attacks through kicks than muscular thighs and calves that can resist them. Muscular thighs form a barrier to protect the bone underneath. I don't buy the hype of his squating strength when his thighs don't look muscular at all either as all of the video footage I have seen of him squatting is doing those half-squats where there are bars that stop his squats half way through with 3 or 4 plates on each side. He also usually does not put the bar across his shoulder, but instead holds the bar in his arms while doing squats. That also reduces the difficulty in going down in squats. Also, having skinny legs makes the center of gravity much higher (as Jon Jones has a pot belly where he a good part of 40 lbs).

While he does not have to worry about being taken down by Gane, Jones is more vulnerable to takedowns at heavyweight by other strong competitors who have really good wrestling. Skinny legs are also easier to get a hold of during a takedown than tree trunk legs that will have more "counter weight" and harder to wrap the arms around.

Put it altogether. Gane weighs the same as Jones at 250 lbs. However, Gane looks a lot bigger and with a completely balanced physique top to bottom. Both have similar height. What does that say? Gane is naturally a bigger competitor with bigger bones and muscular frame. I am not saying Gane is going to beat Jones. Just saying he has the natural advantage has he is the bigger, more muscular and more thick boned competitor.

Come on! Larry wheels is like Arnold. Tall and has proportionally smaller legs than his upper body, but his legs are still damn huge. No one can call these legs "skinny". Jon Jones has skinny thighs with no muscles or anything on them. Completely different.

I tell you about a power lifter that has skinny calves like Jones and you share a photo of him with his calves cropped out lmao. Holy shit.

Be honest for a second, did you literally make up those first couple of paragraphs? I've studied anatomy and competed in powerlifting myself and also know biomechanics. I seriously hope you're just ignorant and copy/pasted that absolute garbage from reddit or something.

Jones "thighs" are fine for an athletic competitor as you can see below. Also the Squat in this video looks to be acceptable depth and would get white lit at a meet. Never mind the other enormous pulls he does as well. How can you explain how he does this with "no muscles or anything" on his thighs???

Both look big and strong.

You're naive if you think a 250lbs HW always needs to have a six pack to be conditioned well.
The thing is that a lot was made about Jones bulking and gaining size.

He was fighting at about 220lbs with a nice 6 pack in his LHW days.

Now he is 250lb and looks like about 30lbs... fatter.
