It wasn't any kind of secret drug suspension or other conspiracy theory. The truth is that the Reyes fight scared the shit out of Jon. He knew he was living on borrowed time at LHW, he was losing his size and speed advantage and getting older. He flirted with quitting the UFC altogether during that famous 3-way beef with himself, Dana, and Ngannou where Jones had insulted Ngannou's skill and Frank then challenged him to settle it in the cage. He found a way out of that situation by agreeing to the fight but asking Dana for 'Deontay Wilder money' in order to do so. Dana publicly ridiculed him a few times and Jon finally said he was quitting MMA altogether. But a few weeks later he had a different idea, he wasn't quitting, he was just preparing for the next chapter in his remarkable career--finally moving up to HW. The only problem being that if he wanted the title shot he would have to fight Frank after all. This began the 3 year process of promising to fight 'when he was ready'. After a couple years of this Ngannou left the UFC for more money and finally and suddenly Jon was ready. Waiting it out payed off for Jones as he matched up well with Cyril Gane for the vacant belt. But he doesn't match up well with interim champ Tom Aspinall so here we have more ridiculousness with Jones again trying to get an easy fight with Stipe Miocic and avoiding the actual contenders in the division.
