Media Jon Jones: My only advantage over my competition has been pure Hard work.

I dislike Jon as much as the next guy, but this line of argument has never made any sense to me. He makes weight just like everybody else. He is not the only tall and rangey fighter in the world, either. If long reach was some kind of secret weapon, Stephan Struve would be GOAT.

Jon is a specimen, for sure.

It is kinda funny hearing him talk about "hard work" when he has previously bragged about entering championship fights with almost no training - didn't he brag about partying and doing drugs the week before a title defence?

Now, it's just "hard work." Cool, Jon.
He's made weight because he has no legs. You can't deny that his insane reach at 205 isn't a huge advantage, anytime he faces people even close to his size there were problems. Jon won't have the advantage in this fight though.

I remember there being guys from Jackson's that said Jon was a natural and didn't have to work hard. In particular Jon took to jujitsu really fast without much training and while partying.

I remember when the only thing you could really dislike about Jones was his personality. Oh, how times have changed.

He is now widely regarded as the worst cheater in sports history. Jones is the first person who comes to mind when you think of cheaters in this sport.

And wasn't Jones thing in his prime that he didn't train that hard? I remember him making a big deal out of it in interviews. That he was sooo talented that he didn't need to work as hard as others.
That was literally just a psychological attack on his opponents. Getting in their heads like "haha you actually spar and go to the gym?". When in fact Jones was sparring at the gym then working out in his garage gym at home. Same reason some fighters would post big buffet meals and deserts on their social media and tag their opponents during weight cutting just to mess with them. As if they are pigging out on steak dinners and ice cream instead of being near death in sauna.

If it was illegal at the time it was still illegal. Just because they changed the rules doesn't mean you can retroactively go back and claim you didn't cheat.

Like if the speed limit used to be 65 and I got caught going 74. Then 10 years later they up the limit to 75 I can't go back and get reparations for speeding. Or claim I didn't speed b/c the limit was later changed. Stupid.

He's all over the place. Maybe one day we'll find out he suffered from bipolar disorder the whole time. (No offense intended to anyone with bipolar disorder or any other mental health diagnosis).

Your analogy is spot on. I got a ticket for 39 in a 25 once and by the time it went to court the speed limit had been changed to 40, I used Jon Jones logic, didn't work, had to do some volunteer work to avoid the ticket and points.

All the people shitting on Jones have nothing to say about Islam and O'Malley having the exact same excuse for their PED failures.

Again, I don't see the logic to this argument. If what you're saying were true - that Jon is succesful largely because of his skinny legs and long reach - why don't we have total bean poles dominating every weightclass? These taller/rangier fighters that Jones has had problems with - why aren't they as succesful as Jones? Why isn't Gustafson the clear #2 LHW of all time, second to Jones only because Jones's calves are just a liiiiiitle bit skinner? Hogwash.

DC is a fantastic wrestler because of his extroardinary power, and this is related to his squat physique - yet Jon, who has the opposite physique, showed himself to be at least the equal of DC in wrestling. How is that?

Jon is very obviously more than just reach and a lack of leg meat. Crucially, he is very athletic, he is a fast learner of physical techniques, he is surprisingly strong, he has an incredible chin, he has fantastic fight IQ, etc. etc. These are the qualities that are responsible for Jon's success.

There are PLENTY of human beings with skinny legs and long arms that can't fight for shit. Calling Jones a "size bully" or accusing him of posessing some kind of rarely seen physical attributes that result in his fighting dominance is simply not true, and it just makes Jon seem even better when his haters are so desperate to grasp at these straws to discredit him. As I say, I count myself among the people who think Jon is a shitty human and I root for him to lose every time, so I don't like these indefensible attempts at discrediting him.

There are plenty of good ways to criticize Jones. Invoking bullshit about skinny legs and unfair height/reach just seems desperate.

Also when you think of domestic abuse. Even with Dana's recent notoriety, Jones is still the guy.

For me, the most damning evidence proving Jones's PED guilt was when he tried to discredit the steroid accusations with the grain of salt in a swimming pool. As if we are so fucking stupid as to fall for this line of reasoning.

Jon defending himself against other hypothetical accusations:

"the gunpowder residue matching the murder weapon found on my hands was microscopic - are you telling me that I killed someone with so tiny an amount?"

"the matches recovered from my pockets that were shown to have started that apartment building fire are 1 million times smaller than the apartment building - everybody is getting upset about something that's only one millionth the size?! ridiculous."

I understand many guilty people say they're innocent, but innocent people have spent the rest of their lives in prison for crimes they didn't commit. Innocent people have been executed and exonerated by DNA evidence after the fact.

And your point in relation to this thread is...?

"I am innocent." - Every criminal ever

Jon can try to spin his career anyway he wants, and Dana will help him for as long as Jon is making money, but we all know where he has been, and where this ride is likely to end.

you think everyone pleads Innocent?

Yeah, if we include all sports, Mark McGwire is an all-time great when it comes to cheating. I'm not sure why I wrote "sports." I meant in the history of Mixed Martial Arts.

It's insane how many rules he's broken while attempting to cheat in this sport. From multiple positive drug tests to a slew of fouls inside the cage. I wouldn't be surprised if he holds the record for the most eye pokes in the organization's history. The man was almost disqualified for the second time in his career after throwing a stupid illegal strike against Smith.

I think he honestly believes that , I’m not saying he doesn’t work hard but this guy has athletic gifts that 99.9% of people couldn’t even dream of

To be fair it wasn't just him saying it. His team, alot of fighters and Rogan shared this thing.

I think particularly the first Gustaffson fight he barely trained, and I've heard more than one person say that. So yes I agree with you.

I think it was more an observation than an argument.

The sport is full of trade-offs. Cut weight and be weaker or don't cut weight and be smaller. Train wrestling or train boxing. Bladed stance or traditional.

Fact is, every opponent has known about Jon's weak legs since he fought friggin Bonnar. And no one has been able to actually capitalize on it. It's interesting!

Remember when half of sherdog thought Shogun would punish those legs? Heh.

And as far as a trade-off goes - if it can be considered one, to have weaker legs and be bigger everywhere else - it's been very, very successful.
