Jon Jones explains himself

Nobody cares about this doping drug addict.
Let him get his last fight for "legacy" that nobody will care about.

They have let this criminal pos slide far too many times and I for one will be glad to see him go.

Good riddance.

"With PEDs" he should've added before saying "facts" like a teenager.

How much does beating 41 year old stipe actually do for his legacy?

Yeah right. If Tom (and I don't believe this) goes and never wins the real belt, it will mean nothing. And all of Sherdog will call Tom a can. It's just the way the cards are on the table right now.

Tom is basically already the real champion. He has nothing to win, as soon as Jones retires they are just going to stop calling it interim.

Beating Aspinall in 2024 is more meaningful than beating a 42 year old Stipe who hasn't fought in 4 years.

My point is in the history books as of right now Aspinall is a "nobody"! Def. has the potential to be one of the greatest...TBD

This. Jones beat Gane who lost to the real champ. If his only defense is against a 42 year old Stipe coming off getting KO'd by the real champ 4 years ago, it's just another asterisk added to his "legacy".

Where are Gane or Pavlovich fans now? Aspinall is cool until the first loss which could be from Almeida.

Stipe has a proven and is not as risky.

Gane was the young relevant opponent but now he does not count.
I think Pavlovich is still a good modern heavyweight and can easily come back from the loss. Stipe lost a few before he found his mojo. I get the impression from Ganes interviews he not wanting to live the MMA life 24/7

I think the issue for Tom is what if he has to defend the interim belt a few times before that happens?

Do his defenses retroactively be upgraded to full title defenses when he is promoted to full champion?

If not then what's the point of him fighting anybody right now? He has said his entire goal is to become the HW GOAT and beat Stipe's defense record. If he defends the interim belt once or twice and then he's upgraded to undisputed and the UFC tell him he is starting again from 0 defenses, then it will have all been for nothing.

That's why If Jon is adamant about fighting Stipe it shouldn't be for the title. Give Tom the belt now and let him start forging his own legacy while Jon cements his against Stipe, a fight that doesn't need the belt.

We have a previous example in Barao. Is he considered a 3 time defending champion? He never gets brought up in bantamweight GOAT conversations, although that may be because of how awful and immediate his decline was.

Very good point. I think he is.

Hes to old to string together a series of wins without another failing any more tests.

Translation- "No way In hell I'm fighting a big, young, hungry, athletic generational talent like Aspinall who will put me to bed inside a round. That will be horrible for my legacy I won't shut up about.

I'm taking out arthritic old man Stipe who can barely walk without his cane. Calling myself the HW GOAT, then peacing out."

You mean like Gane? The guy he beat in 30 seconds ...
