News Jon Fitch retires,

Some of the messages in this thread are brutal.

Over the years, I've read messages on Sherdog that call him Jon "The Smoke Break" Fitch.

I've also read similar messages about Jake Shields.

It's not like Jon Fitch and Jake Shields were forcing you to watch their MMA fights. It's not like Jon Fitch and Jake Shields captured any titles inside the UFC (which is because St-Pierre kept eliminating both of them).

Even though it's true that Jon Fitch and Jake Shields captured many titles OUTSIDE the UFC, there were also many MMA fighters that stopped them OUTSIDE the UFC.

Armendarez stopped Jake Shields outside the UFC.

Palhares stopped Jake Shields outside the UFC.

Ray Cooper III stopped Jake Shields outside the UFC.

Jake Ellenberger stopped Jake Shields INSIDE the UFC.

Pyle stopped Jon Fitch outside the UFC.

Gouveia stopped Jon Fitch outside the UFC.

Johny Hendricks stopped Jon Fitch INSIDE the UFC.

Burkman stopped Jon Fitch outside the UFC.

Palhares stopped Jon Fitch outside the UFC.

Neiman Gracie stopped Jon Fitch outside the UFC.

Jon Fitch was caught being a drug addict at least once in his entire life. However, there are many fighters in MMA and Boxing that are drug addicts.

The fact is, I was entertained by many of the MMA fights that Jon Fitch and Jake Shields had over the years. I suppose that that fact makes me a "tryhard MMA fan" or a "hipster mofo."

So be it.

Despite him being pretty cringey the past few years, was always a fan. If for any reason he was a fun experiment of how far a fighter who is a mediocre athlete and not very skilled could go. And also since he's actually tried to make conditions better for fighters by stepping up and actually participating in the lawsuit. Kind of sad more mma fans don't give him credit for the latter.

Bizarre that fitch went to a draw with rory and then lost to the guy that rory controlled easily.

Rory has one of the best ground games in WW. He handled Maia pretty damn easily as well.
He's a 1 dimensional fighter. 1 dimensinoal fighters have crazy different performances like that. Bob Sapp beat Ernesto Hoost. Then looked like a bitch against Cro Cop. Styles make fights, especially when you're 500% in 1 area and 20% in everything else.

Was cut Post Prime, don't worry you'll eventually get there, just need some time kid
kid, patience is key. You'll get there. You have the swing hands at each other already, eventually, you'll learn about grappling, something a little more advance.
The irony is that Fitch gets dominated by every good grappler he faces

It's ok boomers, keep white knighting for an irrelevant jobber

how is he an afterthought? he was still competing in Bellator and somebody just made a thread about him that me and you are currently posting in lol
<{katwhu}>
Yes someone made a thread about him, so he totally wasn't an afterthought.

I'm sure someone's made a thread about Liz Carmouche too, what a superstar she is!

he was one of the best WW ever for years? that doesn't make sense.

dude was overrated back then and he sure doesn't rate all time.
Definitely overrated, people just remember him for being ranked #2 and having win streaks. But he rarely fought truly top competition, his best wins are Alves x2(and the first time Alves was green) and Sanchez. He was ranked #2 because other top guys would face each other and knock each other out of the top 5 while Fitch would keep grinding decisions against guys who upper mid-tier. I think he was once ranked like #5 p4p which is crazy.

I never found him boring. Actually thought he was one of the most exciting fighters ever. When I think about it he probably is the most entertaining fighter ever

Hope he gets to enjoy retirement from fighting and g'luck with whatever pursuits.

As always thanks for the scraps - I enjoyed many.

Thinking about it how did he never fight koscheck or the other dudes that were top back then....

Just announced it in Bellator after a loss. Like his style or not he was one of the best Welterweights ever for years. Hespect

He was never that good to be honest. He did well against lower ranked opponents.

Enjoy retirement.

How was he "overrated back then"? In his prime, Fitch was the consensus #2 active WW for the best part of 5 years.

He went 13-1 in the most stacked division from UFC debut to the Penn draw. His style was tough to watch, but it was extremely effective.

Another poster who replied to me already addressed this pretty well. Fitch was never the second best WW in the world.

One of the top WW I watched early on when I'm starting as an MMA fan. I always believed he fought the best GSP ever. A great guy and always a tough challenge for anyone in his prime. I respect him for all the great fights he put on. That's why I mentioned him in my sig, lol. Hope he enjoys his retirement.

I've never been a fan of his boring ass style. Leading up to his title shot he practically fought a bunch nobody's minus Thiago Alves.

Looking back at his overall career what was his hallmark performance that defined him anyway? I can't think of any because he fought the exact same way each and every fight. It's hard to like a guy like Jon Fitch knowing his whole game plan was to backpack you to a decision.

If you want to talk about a positive about Jon Fitch I can say the guy had heart in the GSP fight.

Jon was the definition of a grinder. Never that exciting but he stuck around a while. Too bad he couldn’t throw a ball 95mph, a slow grinder mentality like his would have been perfect for baseball.

His biggest win was prob Diego and the Alves rematch.

I did think Alves has improved more than Jon by the time they rematched, but Jon did what he does to most in that fight.

You’re right. Nothing stands out too much.

Jeez not sure what to think about all the hate for Fitch but he was an elite WW for a long time. Everyone needs to hang them up Eventually. I wish him well
