Speaking of Deniro... he was so horribly miscast. He's a great actor but if you've ever seen him do an interview, he's an absolute DUD with no charisma, so I wasn't feeling him playing a late night host.

You think so? I thought he did great with his role. He genuinely came off as a charismatic talk show host to me.

I’ve heard a few criticisms with this movie, but he’s rarely brought up as one of them.

yeah you've got nothing
Sir, i cant upgrade you farther from being a "fucking blast at parties" any further.

Best to pout toward your intial contender.

Or continue with me, i dont care.

32 . Technically still a Millennial. I thought Phoenix was great , but the plot was straight forward and the majority of the cast felt bland and De Niro was miscast for the sake of the connection to his two movies.

Fair enough. I started to predict plot points in the second half as well, but it still flowed. I connected with it emotionally. I almost cried at least once, and I laughed pretty hard a few times. Millenials in general are not going to see the dark humor as well, imo, but enough of that. I think it was near perfect until the last 25 minutes.

His transition from a good soul to a bad one could have used a bump.

I'm a little confused by this statement, I know you are usually on all the MCU threads and you've always rated those movies extremely high. How is this movie not a major improvement over them? For one, this film had certain scenes that aren't as predictable as your average MCU film.

Even if you can predict scenes, why is that a bad thing? Did it take away from the performance, the story, etc?

Yes. 8.5-9/10.

If it wasn't confined into a semi dc universe, it could have been almost a 10. I didn't like the show near the end, outside of his entrance.

I rate movies on my experience dont take my rating for a legit rating, if I have fun in a movie and enjoy the experience I'll rate it higher . Phoenix is great here but the rest of this movie didn't resonate with me hence why I would say he gave a 9 -10 while I have the movie at a 7. Yeah I have more fun at most MCU movies but those are way more of a suspension of belief so I go in expecting the absurd. This movie feels like a drama about a mentally ill anti hero grounded in reality and I didn't enjoy it as much.

How do ya think ya might have felt about it were it not a comic book movie?

I'd probably rate it lower because I fucking hate clowns . But the Joker is an Icon . Also the references to Batman Lore with Bruce and Arkham added to the plot because you know they are destined to battle and Arkham is shady personified if it was some random kid and hospital they would be meaningless to me the viewer.

That's the thing.. It's a great movie. Younger comic movie fan hasn't seen many of those. I almost think it's going to be a defense mechanism for some of them so they don't have to wake up to the fact they (and we) have been eating garbage (and a little better) for 12 years now.

I used that line to poke fun at the difference between canon and origin stories

You used that line to make fun of not wanting kids to read comic books about molestation and torture

Are people confusing a good performance for a good movie?

It’s getting trashed by critics but audiences seem to be enjoying it.

Where do you stand, with the critics or audience?

Alan Moore does his dark sexual thing in a number of genres successfully, League of Extraordinary, Swamp Thing and more. I love what he did with League, I think it's incredible and sears into your brain

But Batgirl wasn't guilty of the crimes the Invisible Man committed. It wasn't deserved even within the lore. Its darkness revealed nothing about the joker, its meditation on Batman's occasional powerlessness had been done countless times before with countless villains. It is a storyline about the Joker getting the upper hand in a hostage situation, that's pretty much as deep as it got

And yet Alan Moore fanboys gush about it being the finest comic plot ever written, the best he's ever done, the best there ever was in the DC universe. It's the same shallow fandom that followed Kubrick's home invasion scenes like they meant something deeper than a gross f*cking home invasion

I'm so fucking choked. Had tickets for tonight and my buddy fucking fell asleep. And I couldn't go it alone because he was like 40 minutes late before I heard from him. Not gonna see it until next week some time. FUCK!
