What has Marvel done that is remotely this bizarre in regards to a character and timeline?
Marvel avengers and deadpool + X-men don't exist in same timeline. Apparently fantastic 4 movies never existed. I don't know how many times they are going to reboot spiderman.

Phoenix's, so far, at least aesthetically, doesn't have a presence of fear, and I'm curious if this movie will have the opposite problem than Leto's Joker - Its an origin movie, so he's going to have to be in the majority of it.

The more you see a character, the more you are familiar with him, and the less he is to be feared.

The marketing so far for this is extremely bizarre. I wonder if there is any chance this isn't the final look and it evolves a bit more but then again the studios are probably not that thoughtful and they are just going to use social media to promote this by showing every single part of the movie in spoilers. I'm hoping this is actually a well crafted marketing campaign with a swerve that will reveal something later but if it turns out the studio actually allowed cell phone footage of the joker to be 'leaked' to TMZ to promote this movie then I got a bad feeling on who is steering this project artistically. Could you image some studio suite trying to pitch an idea to Nolan to allow some asshole with a cell phone to leak crystal clear video like that? It's like releasing behind of scenes extras for a movie that typical come out when the bluray for home is release except you are doing this during the filming.

Those weren’t produced by the same production companies, so not the MCU at all. Also, since Disney got the partial rights to Spider-Man he is in the same universe.
This crap is all WB and Dc screwing something they have complete control over.

Joker being dropped into a vat of chemicals was the story I read in a batman annual when I was a kid. How come that's not cannon?

I think DC is trying to partial reboot their DCU they will only keep WW, Aquaman and Shazam.

you're one of those "it's all in Batman's head bro" Alan Moore fans aren't you

God no, the guy is a bitter asshole. I don’t get how he hates every film adaption of his work.

I’m just playing the “alleged” card like they do in news whenever anything involving sex happens.

This just made it click in my mind that there won't be a Batman in this movie. It's all focused on the Joker.

I'm kind of hoping this is what Suicide Squad should have been. One of the biggest problems with a lot of the super hero movies is that they don't develop the bad guys. It's pretty retarded why directors and writers havent caught on to this.
People loved the Dark Knight mainly for Joker. And despite that, few films really have developed a strong bad guy to counter their heroes.
I was initially excited for Suicide Squad because it wouldve been a movie that showed bad guys as deep characters, and not just mindless, evil thugs.
So far, I'm liking what i see with this Joker movie.

Thats the thing, iconic villain like joker doesnt work as a side character.

Suicide squad came off as saints row rip off.

For such a high profile project, their on-set security sucks

it's not personal I just ruthlessly mock Alan Moore fandom because they seem to appreciate his shittiest creations and ignore the brilliant elements of his other work.

Alan Moore fan cliches include:

1. calling Swamp Thing the most original story in the history of the written word for being a horny fanfic romance novel about a beauty and a beast. Ignoring the beautiful work of Totleben and Steve Bissette to instead give credit to Moore for how the comic book looks.
2. calling The Killing Joke the most original story in the history of Batman comics for featuring a villain capturing an attractive woman and using her to lure the hero into a trap. Ignoring all the surprise-rape-imagery central to what would have been an otherwise straightforward "captured heroine" comic book plot because Alan Moore is horny
3. ignoring The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen ever happened, never acknowledging it anywhere near his Top 3; forgetting there ever was an Alan Moore version that managed to out-do Orson fucking-Welles in evocative imagery and end-of-the-world fatalism. Also the characters have sex with each other because Alan Moore is horny. Moore also decides Orson Welles' story needed Mr. Hyde raping the Invisible Man to death but nobody remembers
4. Forgetting Alan Moore fired more illustrators under his projects than anyone else in the industry, only to wind up giving more credit to Alan Moore for how his comics look because he hired a guy, while also forgetting said guy's name

Check out this can above me

Caring that much about what people think of Alan Moore

Alan Moore fan cliches include:

In my opinion, he's the most overrated comic writer.

He was good, don't get me wrong, but the movies based on Watchmen and V For Vendetta were SO much better than the original comics.

For myself, I don't care.

I enjoy the character of Joker and will watch countless interpretations of him, regardless of if they fit into any other story-line or not.

I'm surprised that hardcore comic book fans have any problem with this, we were raised reading our favorite characters in all manners of different titles. Seriously, what's the problem?

Maybe @Anung Un Rama could help shed some light, he has ten times the comic book cred I ever had.

If this is just a stand alone Joker story then that is awesome, but if its going to try and provide an origin for the Joker and explain why he is the Joker than that is crossing a line. IMHO. I'm not even a DC guy so my authority on this subject is shakey.

@prod2821 ? What say you? With the success of Justice League do you think this is a good idea?

Not much of a problem per se, it's easy enough to avoid all these shitty comic book movies --

-- that said, any fan of this stuff who hasn't already should do themselves a favor & just read The Killing Joke, which is still the best Joker origin story / iteration, and no movie will probably ever do the character better justice. (Heh... justice)

They just need to make a good movie for once and see what happens.

I've been asking myself, why does Joaquin look more intimidating without makeup, than he does with the makeup?

And I think I have the answer - - Because we've seen creepy clown makeup before, and its not anything new. Its more reminiscent of the 1960s Batman TV show Joker.

Campy, comedic, and not intimidating.

Nicholson and Ledger rose the bar for the Joker role, and each version of The Joker stole the show from each Batman in their respected movies - because they had the intimidation factor nailed.

So, why didn't Leto's performance, and the small bits of Phoenix we've seen, not working?

Leto's was too over-the-top to be taken seriously, like he was a Joker that was trying too hard. Also, he was barely in the movie, and was overshadowed by Harley Quinn. He, in short, was a joke.

And one of the most intriguing aspects of The Joker is, he doesn't have an origin story... or a widely accepted one. Sure there's 'The Killing Joke' or Batman 1989 story that he was dropped into a vat of chemicals, but that isn't 'cannon.'

Anyone can be the Joker, and all it takes is having one very bad day.

And that is going to be what kills this version of an on-screen Joker.

So, what's it going to take to make an on-screen version of The Joker successful? I hate to say it, but they're going to have to make Ledger's Joker look like 1960s TV Joker in comparison.

They're going to have to bring in an Hard-PG-13 / borderline 'R' rated subject matter to the Joker character - the aesthetic, the performance, and the plot.

Yes, they're going to have to make Ledger's Joker look like a pussy.
