Wearing the clown mask on top of the make up is a bad idea, as it invites comparisons with Ledger doing the same in Dark Knight.

That looks almost as good as this joker costume.

I don't get this. How the origins of joker played by a dude older than the suicide squad and batman joker? or this is one of those they do not exist in our timeline thing like marvel?

There's no way to make this make sense.
DC is just throwing shit at the wall and hoping to god that something sticks

What has Marvel done that is remotely this bizarre in regards to a character and timeline?

This has potential.

Maybe even introducing batman for the sequel
This just made it click in my mind that there won't be a Batman in this movie. It's all focused on the Joker.

I'm kind of hoping this is what Suicide Squad should have been. One of the biggest problems with a lot of the super hero movies is that they don't develop the bad guys. It's pretty retarded why directors and writers havent caught on to this.
People loved the Dark Knight mainly for Joker. And despite that, few films really have developed a strong bad guy to counter their heroes.
I was initially excited for Suicide Squad because it wouldve been a movie that showed bad guys as deep characters, and not just mindless, evil thugs.
So far, I'm liking what i see with this Joker movie.

For myself, I don't care.

I enjoy the character of Joker and will watch countless interpretations of him, regardless of if they fit into any other story-line or not.

I'm surprised that hardcore comic book fans have any problem with this, we were raised reading our favorite characters in all manners of different titles. Seriously, what's the problem?

Maybe @Anung Un Rama could help shed some light, he has ten times the comic book cred I ever had.

I'm pretty sure that's just his stage act make-up, and not the post chemical accident/villain make-up.
Ya. That makes sense as he goes from maybe more of a petty criminal to more of a force of nature wrecking machine after his life altering and mind altering disfigurement.

While I agree in theory with what you say I am one, like many, who believes the Joker backstory is one that should remain ambiguous. He is best when more of a force of nature, Anton Chigurh, type. And maybe DC can manage that here and still give us a good story without over exposing his history but I have so little faith in DC at this point I remain skeptical. But I am very cautiously... cautiously... cautiously.. trying to be optimistic.

Personally, I don't really care about the comic accuracy of this particular movie because I didn't read much Batman.
But, I was a big Xmen reader, and when they ruin the stories of those, Indo get my nerd panties in a bunch. There's decades of great stories already there for the taking, and those stories are what made the characters who they are. Even with different tellings over the years, the characters don't usually make giant leaps from previous renditions.
Basically, if you're going to spend the time and money to make a movie, i don't want to see the director's version of the character. Movies don't get made as often as comics, so you only have a limited amount of shots to get it right.
Leto's Joker can fuck off.

It seems a lot of people's problem with this movie is that they feel the Joker's origin should be secret....for me, i don't really care about that if everything else is good. Knowing his background won't kill the character for me if he's done right.
They could have slipped in a small origin story or flashback for Ledger's Joker and i would have still been a fan

People said same thing about Ledger Joker when those pics first leaked.

Ledger got shitted on ton when the news broke that he got the gig back in '06 and then people would circulate fake Joker photos of him.

The first actual teaser photos of Health were well received. People got on board with Health very quickly once they had actual evidence of what he looked and sounded like.

The main issue with people excepting Heath at the time was dealing with the homophobic mania of the aftermath of Brokeback Mountain whereas Phoenix's main issue will be dealing with the followup to playing the Joker a few years after the role has been tainted by Leto and Suicide Squad. The Joker role has now been done 3 times in almost 10 years whereas Ledger got a 19 year break which is a huge advantage to people's anticipation. It's sort of like how Skarsgard playing Pennywise works so well because he had 28 years from Tim's version.

I'd also say it's really odd that we now have more footage of Phoenix's Joker in just a couple weeks of filming then what we had for the Dark Knight during the entire filming. I will say this version looks intriguing to me I hope they don't taint this movie by spoiling the shit out of it.

I've been asking myself, why does Joaquin look more intimidating without makeup, than he does with the makeup?

And I think I have the answer - - Because we've seen creepy clown makeup before, and its not anything new. Its more reminiscent of the 1960s Batman TV show Joker.

Campy, comedic, and not intimidating.

Nicholson and Ledger rose the bar for the Joker role, and each version of The Joker stole the show from each Batman in their respected movies - because they had the intimidation factor nailed.

So, why didn't Leto's performance, and the small bits of Phoenix we've seen, not working?

Leto's was too over-the-top to be taken seriously, like he was a Joker that was trying too hard. Also, he was barely in the movie, and was overshadowed by Harley Quinn. He, in short, was a joke.

Phoenix's, so far, at least aesthetically, doesn't have a presence of fear, and I'm curious if this movie will have the opposite problem than Leto's Joker - Its an origin movie, so he's going to have to be in the majority of it.

The more you see a character, the more you are familiar with him, and the less he is to be feared.

And one of the most intriguing aspects of The Joker is, he doesn't have an origin story... or a widely accepted one. Sure there's 'The Killing Joke' or Batman 1989 story that he was dropped into a vat of chemicals, but that isn't 'cannon.'

Anyone can be the Joker, and all it takes is having one very bad day.

And that is going to be what kills this version of an on-screen Joker.

So, what's it going to take to make an on-screen version of The Joker successful? I hate to say it, but they're going to have to make Ledger's Joker look like 1960s TV Joker in comparison.

They're going to have to bring in an Hard-PG-13 / borderline 'R' rated subject matter to the Joker character - the aesthetic, the performance, and the plot.

Yes, they're going to have to make Ledger's Joker look like a pussy.

isn't the rumor that this movie is following 'the killing joke' origin?

either way, phoenix is an excellent actor for the role. i was disappointed with leto because they went almost too gangster for the little screen time he got. i would have preferred if mr. j was communicating with harley but then when he arrived he was clearly an imposter with the real mr. j still in the wind. until they were ready to actually feature the joker. and for comic book fans, leto could have been jason todd - queue shock on harley's face when he makes the save.

Sure, but maybe it's best they don't try and reinvent the wheel this time. I see nothing wrong with aping Ledger's Joker a bit. That's who everybody identifies the character with. Play it safe. I'd rather that, than some failed re-imagining like Leto's gangsta Joker.
