Movies JOHN WICK Official Thread (Dragonlord's Review)

Watched the Matrix (with Rifftrax) last night to get in Keanu mode before seeing Wick tonight.

Really enjoyed it. Was funny when it needed to be (really funny at that) and the fights were always fast paced and showed that Wick had a method to his madness. Neo vs Mockingbird with Green Goblin watching was an enjoyable scrap, I liked how the hotel owner paid that off. Liked how they were using Sambo often being that these were Russian mob members plus 'Big Sexy' Kevin Nash got to be a Russian again, shades of the Punisher which I kept thinking of.

I gave it a 7/10. As people have said it's very video game like. I liked how they added some bjj and judo moves to the fight scenes and the action was well done overall. It's a dumb, fun movie.

I'd give it an 8/10. The over the top story was setup nicely by the director. The combination of gun play and hand to hand combat was entertaining. Variation of gi chokes were used.

Best part for me was the assassin community. They can definitely make sequels based off that.

John Wick. Movie has awesome, can't say enough good things about it. The fight scenes were off the chain. To me it seemed like a modern hyper-violent take on film noir. With John Wick playing the detective out to make things right. Some also very cool subtle plot points which were great too. 8/10.

John Wick: 8.5/10

It was fun and straightforward. The backstory and rising action are all taken care of within 15 minutes. From there on, it's a lot of ass-kicking and headshoting. I've heard people complain that the end dragged on, but I didn't feel that way. And at 1 hour, 45 minutes, there's not a lot to drag on anyway.

It seems to draw influence from other top shoot 'em ups and revenge flicks like Smokin' Aces and Payback. It's stylish but doesn't interfere with your pleasure with a convoluted twist or drawn out backstory. Oh, and the best part? No damsels in distress or tacked-on love interests.

Good call about the lack of damsels or love interests, I saw a screening with Reeves and the directors, Reeves was really funny and said it should be a drinking game. Whiskey for headshots, beer for body shot then tequila for any unarmed death.

Went with 7/10 but it's closer to 6.5.

Fight scenes are good, as is the mood of the movie. Acting is rough as hell in parts.

If you like mindless action, this movie is for you. If not, well, just sit back and enjoy the mayhem.

Speaking of Mayhem, the Allstate rep is a goon in this.

A friend gave me a heads up about the dog scene to me. I think I'll rent it on Dvd so I can fast forward through it. I can't handle that stuff. I'm a wuss dog lover.

8.5/10. Great film! I was hoping it was a comic or book. I wanted more story about
the hitmen society, gold coins, past murders etc

I agree entirely.. That shit is just jammed into nearly every movie. It was refreshing to leave it out.

Simple plot with an almost absurd but still awesome revenge motive. Amazing action. Lots of cool characters and as said above the really interesting hitman society. I thought it was perfectly paced, for me it didn't drag at all. I gave it an 8 only because 8.5 wasn't an option.

I noticed Kevin Nash but didn't notice Keith Jardine in the movie.. was just looking up the cast on IMDB. I'm a big David Patrick Kelly fan so I loved seeing him in it.. and a huge Oz fan so Dean Winters being in it quite a bit was really cool.

One of the most badass films of the year. No superheroes, no powers, no love interest, no twists, just straight up badass action. Loved the soundtrack also. 8.5/10.

I gave it a 7 but in the past probably would have given it an 8.5 or 9. For me it's just that I've been following so many barbaric world events the over-the-top violence was a bit much . . . I was expecting something between Jack Reacher and John Wick I guess. Complicating the matter (honestly), is that this movie drug up the whole America vs the Ruskies plot-line from the Cold War era of the 80s. Again, probably wouldn't have bothered me so much except that for those who aren't following world events, Russia (who're rekindling behind the scenes shenanigans with China) literally could be launching some sort of freak attack like they've done with the Ukraine - heck, they could be planning a effed move from the north through Canada. Anyway, if any of you guys think this is reading into a simple action flick too much, well, the whole Cold War relations was smack-dab in our faces; the line
"you fuckin' Russian"
made me cringe. As with other world events, you never know what gets in a radical-leader-like-Putin's craw. Again, coupled with all the rampant mega-violence (beheadings, mass executions, crucifixions etc by ISIS) available on little old youtube, I found the excessive violence a little awkward to be honest.

Anyway, I love Keanu (Bill and Ted [is there a more unlikely action star badass?!!!], The Replacements, The Matrixes, Constantine [LOVE that film - John Wick was similar to Constantine "dark" Reeves], and now this) and don't get the hate - it's just his voice people, NOT bad acting (guy just sounds like a surfer - it's an accent thing!).

Yeah, if it weren't for all the real violence I'm seeing in the news these days, I'd have probably enjoyed the movie more. And then the whole us against the Russians thing . . . Other than all that it was really good.

Outside of the aforementioned, my only other knocks on the film were these:

I just wish the action were more consistent throughout (sorry to reference Jack Reacher again, but the encounters and the way Reacher [Cruise] dealt with them and survived was much more consistent). Like Wick gets beaten up rather easy in his house at the beginning . . . But then revenges through some awesome acts of violence (at his house again, and then at the club) only to get Kayoed rather easily and strapped to a chair by the Ruskie. So I don't know why they just didn't shoot him with a gun then, instead they try to suffocate him with a bag - which was about the only way he'd escape in that scenario. The point to all I wrote, is that one second he looks invincible (which was awesome and in keeping with the legend that is John Wick) to looking pretty human and killable.

My last criticism, was that final scene . . . I mean he's getting shot at in the car with automatic rifles at close range and by the end of the 10-15 scene John's not even ducking [lol] in his seat with all the windows missing in his car and it covered with bullet-holes . . . Anywho. I guess that's just par for an over-the-top action flick.

I think a film like Jack Reacher walked that fine line of believability better, while ironically, John Wick (the character) might have been a more intriguing/mysterious hero.

Overall worth the watch and I might move its rank higher after I allow it to digest for awhile.

John Wick.

10/10

Musclecars, Jiu Jitsu, Guns. God damn tear jerking opening scenes followed by mayhem and revenge with dudes getting shot in the face with every kind of gun possible after getting thrown, armbarred, and beat the fuck down.

I'm telling you this is the greatest goddamn movie ever made.

I have to admit . . . I like your appreciation of this film lol.

This is what I'm after, 90 minutes of exactly the above. Going to see it tonight, feeling really tired though and I tend to fall asleep in cinemas a lot so fingers crossed.

So. Damn. Fun.
The actions scene were so stylish. John Wick shits all over Max Payne.
Keanu Reeves looks badass in those suits, the fight scenes, the gun fights were some of the best i've seen in recent year. No shaky cam, you can really appreciate whats going on. That nightclub scene is an absolute blast.
Well worth my money. I love revenge flicks.

John Wick can take out the Avengers imo.

I saw John Wick earlier tonight. Keanu defeated MMA fighters Keith Jardine, Tait Fletcher, and Roman Mitichyan, as well as pro wrestler Kevin Nash, (albeit Nash was by forfeit.) Only Tait got a memorable death scene, (dragged around by his mighty beard and then shot in the face.) The moral of the story is, if you're going to play a nameless henchman, it's better to have a unique look. (As I recall, Tait got some offense against Denzel in the Equalizer earlier this year as well.)

Enjoyable film, I thought. A surprising amount of fireman's carries in the fight scenes--like at least six.

Great, mindless entertainment. This is the best movie Jason Statham never made.

8.5/10

Keanu's fantastic at 50, the fight scenes were incredible. Definitely cheesy apart from that but that was to be expected to a point anyway. Might consider going to watch it again depending on how stellar Interstellar is.
