Joe Schilling sucker punching drunk guy

That's not exactly what I'd call a "lunge". That's your basic tough guy, "get in someone's face and make them flinch" move, usually done by people who can't really fight, just boast. However, Schilling had already invaded his personal space by then. You could argue that the little guy had the right to push him by that point. But it clearly hadn't escalated to the point where Schilling had the right to take his head off.
Invaded his personal space? Looks like the guy was in Joe's walking path.

Also, maybe don't get in someones face and make them flinch if you can't back it up?

He ran into him?? He didn't even know he was there he was facing the complete opposite direction lol
This might sound crazy to you, but you dont have to be facing someone to run into them. The guy did, and Joe nudged him back into the direction he came from and kept walking. Joe didn't slam him on the ground, he didn't slam him into the wall, he brushed the guy away and kept walking until the guy yelled something and then as many people in this thread have said he "lunged" at Joe attempting to intimidate him.

He played a stupid game, and he won a stupid prize.

Yeah but the shirt didn't say bar, did it. How is the guy supposed to know if Joe's false advertising like that?

Thats not joes fault or problem...

Its called self awareness and maybe not drinking yourself to the point u dont know who your talking shit too...

The guy feint an attack and paid for it...

It sucks and a nice guy like matt serra or ryan hall probably wouldnt have done this...

But not everyone...in combat sports is a nice

Surprising isnt it?

He tried to lunge at Joe dont be mad because Joe has faster hands
All that can be seen is the man starting to lean forward and schilling immediately uncorked a two punch combo. He didn't raise his hands aggressively nor put his hands on schilling all he did was lean forward. As a kickboxer schilling shouldn't feel threatened by a drunk leaning forward sticking his chin in the air with his hands down.

Here is a list of things schilling could have done instead of going ballistic :-

1. Raise his palms out in a sorry expression and say some conciliatory things and move away from him
2. Put his hand on his shoulder as a friendly gesture and to monitor any incoming punch and any nice things to defuse the situation and walk away
3. Warn him off and move away while keeping eyes on him
4. Say he doesn't want any trouble and call for the bouncers
5. Use the long guard and stiff arm push him away
6. Put him into a Thai clinch and bring his head horizontal which will cause the typical untrained drunk to become helpless
7. Clinch or wrap him up and sweep him onto the floor and take him down
8. Teep him To keep him away
9. Be ready to slip any punches
10. Be Ready to block any punches
11. Be ready to parry any punches
12. Grab his hands and just physically overpower him to restrain him given that he appeared twice as strong as the drunk.anyway

Sherdog is a strange place. It's totally cool for you to shout stuff at people, and then lunge at them attempting to scare and intimidate them. But if you defend yourself you're a monster.

I hope you're not this stupid in real life.
I’m smart enough not to risk getting arrested for assault or worse for some stupid shit with a drunk little guy who poses zero threat to my well being. Again, it was so serious the girl didn’t even turn around.

"Dude just got in his face" some one who is clearly drunk just got in his face in an aggressive manner. Joe probably could have pushed him away but when angry drunk people start getting in your face, its best to not let them escalate it any further.
Aggressive or not, he still just got in his face and hadn't touched him. Pushing him away would've been a good option, but I hope you get how punching him out is something completely different from that and what he actually resorted to. Joe was wrong period. A small and drunk dude, there's no way you're convincing anyone that he couldn't have handled that better than that, especially with him being a 'proffesional' fighter.

He said "Hey" after being rudely moved out of the way. Stop acting like this guy was a threat to anyone. I know people have their self defense fantasies about killing people in street fights, but you have to defend yourself within reason. You can't just lay out and bounce someone who's smaller than you, drunker than you, and untrained because of shit like this. A fall on the back of his head on the ground that hard could have killed them.

Combine that with the fact that he had every opportunity in the world to just walk away. What does a world champion kickboxer have to prove by doing this? That he's a fucking thug and is only known outside of the small karate circles for beating up people with no training on video.

great post... Joe didnt need to do this and in my opinion intentionally walked by the guy and nudged him to try and provoke the drunk guy to say/do something. Joe was looking for any reason to just lay a dude out like that.

I was making a joke about the shirt dude.

Either way Schilling is in the wrong.

If he lunged at joe from 1 foot away he would have engaged physically with joe. He didn’t lunge at him.

You miss the part about him turning back and walking right in the little guy's face?

The little guy never got in anyone's face, Joe did. He's the one who made it physical, all the way, from the moment he shoved him aside, turned back and walked in the guy's face, and then started throwing bombs.

There was no reason for this to be anything other than two guys exchanging some verbal abuse and moving on with their lives. But Schilling obviously wasn't satisfied with just that.

If Schilling behaved like this in every bar, he'd have a couple of bodies on his record by now. Dropping drunken people like a sack of potatoes on a hard floor, is not a good idea in general. Again, he's lucky if there's no injury on the other guy's part.

He didn't feint an attack. He literally leaned forward with his chin in the air and made himself even more vulnerable.

Doing a preemptive assault ko him like that in those circs and with that video providing evidence, schilling had zero justification for uh a level of violence. He is a pro prizefighter and the law expects him to control himself better gven his greater ability to kill and hurt seriously others.

You call what he did whatever you want. Your mind is made up, Joe is a monster and there's nothing anyone can say to change how you feel.

I hope a professional fighter walks up to you and blasts you in the face, claiming he was terrified and used self defense. Lmao that would be great.
