Joe Riggs vs Matt Hughes was 20 years ago!!!

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was sad for Karo but it was cool to see Hughes add another submission to his resume. I was the most excited that night for the return of Sean Sherk, though. I was telling all my friends about this little powerhouse wrestler who'd only ever lost to Hughes and he took Hughes to a decision where he won a round or two. It's too bad Sherk was greeted by the rising GSP, who shut his wrestling down, took him down, and pounded him out, but eventually he'd rule the restarted LW division.

And as a lifelong Mike Goldberg hater, I was thrilled that he wasn't on the broadcast, replaced by the one-time-only UFC broadcaster Matt Vasgersian. He was a baseball guy and occasionally I'd hear him calling a baseball game and I'd always chuckle because his voice will always be in my head saying "Big left and down goes Quarry!"

Fun night of fights.

Karo was super slick with that judo and those armlocks/leglocks, but I think that it would've been similar to his loss to GSP: Hughes would've just been too big and strong on top and he was skilled enough in submissions at that point to where I don't think that Karo would've been able to lock up a kimura on him. If he managed to surprise Hughes with a trip or a throw and end up on top, though, he might've been able to catch something from the top position or in a scramble. Definitely a fight that I wish would've happened...

Yeah, he secures the submission from the half guard but he finished it from side mount. A better example would be Mark Kerr/Pedro Otavio, although this one also needs an asterisk since "The Pedro" screamed in pain but protested the stoppage because he didn't actually tap.

Given Kerr's skill (he also tapped Barnett with a kimura in ADCC) and his strength, Pedro should've thanked that ref for stopping Kerr from ripping his arm off his body 😁

Haven’t thought about this fight in years , I forgot what an ass Pedro made out of himself here

Kerr had such a bizarre run in PRIDE. He fought Branko Cikatić, who was so scared of getting taken down that he kept illegally elbowing Kerr to the head to the point where they stopped the fight and Branko was disqualified. He fought The Pedro and that was a wacky finish. He fought Igor Vovchanchyn when knees to the head weren't allowed on the ground if your opponent was on all fours but Igor didn't know that and knocked Kerr out with knees. Then, of course, as documented in The Smashing Machine, he was dealing with all his out-of-the-ring shit, which culminated in his shocking upset loss to Fujita in the 2000 GP. Then he got surprisingly knocked out by a head kick from the rising Heath Herring. And then after three years of retirement, he comes back and knocks himself out trying to take down Yoshihisa Yamamoto

Hey , Yamamoto knocked him out with a ddt fair and square <lmao>or that’s how they were trying to frame it if I remember correctly.
Also do you think Kerr played up getting hit with those knees from Igor ?
I know it’s so easy to judge from my couch , but he sure regained consciousness pretty quick when that bell rang

Naw, I think those knees got him good. Coleman was in his corner and was the one telling Kerr to get up, otherwise he would've stayed down longer. I'm not sure he actually lost consciousness, that's too hard to tell from those camera angles, but he definitely got hurt. And then how about the coincidence of Coleman being in the corner for that and then soon after defeating Igor with legal knees to the head on the ground to win the 2000 GP?

If I remember correctly, Riggs was associated with the Miletich team at the time Hughes was supposed to defend the title against Parisyan…

When Riggs decided to step up as a late replacement, team Miletich kicked him to the curb, so not only did he not get a full camp, but he also didn’t have the best quality training either…

He ended up losing his title shot at the scale…

I remember this, Jesus Christ 20 years ago.. sigh.

interesting story behind this fight as it mirrors what is happening today with arman.

Orginally this was karos title shot. karo is an armenian like arman but he pulled out due to injury and the ts was given to riggs who was like a darren till type fighter during that time period.

karo was never able to work his way bakc up to the ts. it haunted him and depressed him for the next several years and utlimately took him on a path towards drug addiction.

When the whole Armam thing happened this was the first thing that came to mind

Already passed the 10 year anniversary of Joe Riggs shooting himself in the hand and leg while cleaning his gun. Allegedly.

I remember the pre fight promo like it was yesterday Riggs was all like "Matt Who's" ha ha ha then he missed weight wasn't eligible to win the title and got spanked by Hughes. lmao good times.

This was the first UFC PPV I ever bought.

FUCK am I old...
<WhitmanDefeat>

For me, it was Sanchez vs Riggs, that was the first one. I really loved the way diesel was moving around. Like I know that he lost but I thought that he had excellent movement. Then it turned out that he had a boxing background.

Joe riggs dude would fight at any and all weights. Only guy who ever made fw and hw if I'm not mistaken. I might be though

From heavyweight to welterweight. At the time, there was no lightweight division until BJ Penn and Jens Pulver brought it back.

How Sanchez, who was 3 years behind Joe in striking, ended up pulling off his first standing KO

Yes I remember that as well. Exact word was that his boxing was 3 years behind and to the build up, Sanchez was training with Oscar Dela Hoya who at the time was cool with Dana.

YES!

Also I talked to Riggs about it and he mentioned that if he did not take the fight, he would have been cut from the UFC and he mentioned that at the time, his dream as a kid was to be in the UFC and so he had to take the fight.

I'm still salty we didn't see Karo v Hughes

I am as well my friend. The moment he lost to Thiago Alves, I knew the dream of title shot for Karo was over!

I was so disappointed that UFC 56 dvd omitted that promo line. He really cut a great promo.

I'll always remember Joe as the guy that fought Nick Diaz at the ER in hospital gowns

yeah, that was also the year i completed university and went to a train trip across Europe, Inter aired Figo and Lemmy's biography was published in my country...
A train trip back then through Europe. What an experience.

I would have expected UFC to have evolved a lot more since then.

I remember it very well, that was a great event UFC 56, the main event with Rich was one of the most brutal 1 punch KOs ever. Hughes was so strong to pull off that sub because Riggs was a very strong guy himself.. I really miss those crazy strong American grapplers like Hughes and Sean Sherk that we used to have in UFC. Just don't see people like that in UFC anymore, they will be super slim and strikers these days.
