I remember it like it was yesterday. I was sad for Karo but it was cool to see Hughes add another submission to his resume. I was the most excited that night for the return of Sean Sherk, though. I was telling all my friends about this little powerhouse wrestler who'd only ever lost to Hughes and he took Hughes to a decision where he won a round or two. It's too bad Sherk was greeted by the rising GSP, who shut his wrestling down, took
him down, and pounded him out, but eventually he'd rule the restarted LW division.
And as a lifelong Mike Goldberg hater, I was thrilled that he wasn't on the broadcast, replaced by the one-time-only UFC broadcaster Matt Vasgersian. He was a baseball guy and occasionally I'd hear him calling a baseball game and I'd always chuckle because his voice will always be in my head saying "Big left and down goes Quarry!"
Fun night of fights.
interesting story behind this fight as it mirrors what is happening today with arman.
Orginally this was karos title shot. karo is an armenian like arman but he pulled out due to injury and the ts was given to riggs who was like a darren till type fighter during that time period.
karo was never able to work his way bakc up to the ts. it haunted him and depressed him for the next several years and utlimately took him on a path towards drug addiction.
Karo was super slick with that judo and those armlocks/leglocks, but I think that it would've been similar to his loss to GSP: Hughes would've just been too big and strong on top and he was skilled enough in submissions at that point to where I don't think that Karo would've been able to lock up a kimura on him. If he managed to surprise Hughes with a trip or a throw and end up on top, though, he might've been able to catch something from the top position or in a scramble. Definitely a fight that I wish would've happened...
Anytime a fighter tries the Kimura from half guard, Joe Rogan references the Riggs vs Hughes fight to prove that it can be finished from half guard, when actually it was finished from side control.
Yeah, he secures the submission from the half guard but he finished it from side mount. A better example would be Mark Kerr/Pedro Otavio, although this one also needs an asterisk since "The Pedro" screamed in pain but protested the stoppage because he didn't actually tap.
Given Kerr's skill (he also tapped Barnett with a kimura in ADCC) and his strength, Pedro should've thanked that ref for stopping Kerr from ripping his arm off his body
