Jiri is an honorable man and doing the ufc a solid, but I think it’s a bad business move on his part and any good will from the upper brass he’s getting isn’t making up for that. I don’t think you should ever give up a belt unless they’re forcing you to. Leverage is really important, especially the way the contracts are and the fact they’re “private contractors”.

Absolutely. If the 6-month timeframe is real he easily could have just held the belt until then, but like a true samurai gave it up for others to compete for. When was the last time someone vacated when they weren't going to be out at least a year?

You can likely opt right out of the USADA testing pool if you are no longer champion. And with Jiri being tested every other hour for whatever reason he likely wants a break from testing and constant USADA visits.

Like I said, it's an honorable and commendable move to vacate the title, but it kind of feels like he wasn't really given a choice by the UFC. Makes more sense to me to do an interim and wait until Jiri is back. I can say for certain any other current UFC champ wouldn't have done the same move he did. But what do I know?

what a shame. i hope Jiri recovers soon. like others have said, perhaps the decision to vacate may not have been the best choice from a business standpoint, but i really REALLY respect Jiri for being principled and not wanting to hold up a division. that is some integrity and honor in a sport full of dumbass braggarts. i hope his recovery is smooth and as quick as possible, and i wanna see him fight for either a championship or an interim championship when he comes back!
