Head of the SNP, the first minister of Scotland, Nicola 'Jimmy' Sturgeon has resigned. We don't know why but she had recently tried to enact a gender recognition reform bill which was very unpopular with her electorate and was also blocked by the UK parliament under the gender equality act (stating that it would impinge upon women's rights).

She wanted to approve a bill that if whatever gender you called yourself that would be set in law. But a big case came out where a newly convicted transgender woman Isla Bryson – who committed two rapes while living as a man, Adam Graham – was being initially assessed in the women-only prison Cornton Vale.

Although Bryson was moved to a male prison less than 72 hours later, after Sturgeon herself made it plain “a rapist should not be in a woman’s prison”, the public outcry has not abated. The furore escalated after similar cases emerged, and former inmates of Cornton Vale described their distress at sharing facilities with individuals with male genitalia.

So Scottish independence (which the UK also blocked after Brexit) was Sturgeons biggest selling point and made her pretty popular north of the border but it now looks like a rapist who was trying to game the system by becoming a woman has ended Sturgeon's 8 year career. Supporting the rights of transgender people above that of women looks like the straw that broke the camel's back for Sturgeon.

For international viewers, Jimmy Krankie was part of a popular children's entertainment TV double act back in the 80's in the UK.

Even the BBC had a sly dig at her with this 'mistake'

Jimmy Krankie's gone, and I don't care. Jimmy Krankie's gone, and I don't care.

Frankly, anyone advocating for transgender doctrine should resign. It's a clear indication of being an easily misled fool, and dangerously corruptible.

I don't mind trans really, but if you want to be considered the opposite gender then you should be prepared to go through with the surgery and not just decide it one day and be legally able to use opposite sex spaces 3 months later.

Biology is all that should matter when deciding what spaces people go into, especially female spaces. So called feminists claiming women shouldn't be able to have their own spaces and should be forced to be in private and dangerous spaces with men cosplaying as women.

She always came across well when compared to other UK politicians (admittedly an extremely low bar) even if she seemed to lack a bit of substance ,I don't know what lead her down this path perhaps it was ideological capture by shrill activists particulary those associated with her Green party Allies but It was a very odd hill for her to choose to die on and it was all so avoidable , there were a few specific amendments to the bill that if added would have avoided the furore , instead she doubled down characterising anyone that had any issues with the bill as innately biggoted .

I'd agree with that sentiment. She had a lot more integrity than most other UK politicians. Some might criticise her for leaving when things got difficult but I think it's better for her party that she goes now rather than hang on for dear life like an amoral bloated leech like a certain UK Prime Minister, destroying your party in the process.

I feel like she slipped on a nasty banana skin. Gender identity politics is very divisive and a real hot potato for almost everyone who tries to address it. I feel like some politicians are trying to work out the right approach on the fly and that is just a recipe for disaster.

I just don't see why we can't have separate toilets and prisons for every group. It might end up with empty unused toilets but we are already acclimatised to the 20 perpetually empty disabled bays at supermarkets.

There was an independence referendum in 2014 which was billed as a 'once in a lifetime decision'. The SNP (and other parties) agreed to abide by the result. The result was no and they very soon began to campaign for independence again and another referendum. Most Scots don't want another referendum

https://www.itv.com/news/border/202...-do-not-want-indyref2-next-october-poll-finds

and if there is one the result (according to polls) would be no again.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion_polling_on_Scottish_independence

The SNP's request for another independence referendum has been denied and the UK Supreme Court has ruled that it can not organise one without the permission of the British government.

The SNP has pivoted to the idea that the next UK election will be a de facto independence referendum for Scotland and a vote for the SNP will be a vote for independence. However the majority of Scots are opposed to this as well.

https://www.thenational.scot/news/23316759.two-thirds-scots-reject-de-facto-referendum-independence/

In any case, due to first past the post, the SNP has a disproportionately large fraction of seats in Scotland. In the last UK election, it won 48 out of 59 Scottish seats (81%) with only 45% of votes. The other 3 main parties, which are unionist, together got 11 seats with 53% of votes. Also 32% of those eligible to vote did not.

The majority of Scots do not want independence and Sturgeon's obsession with it has made a large contribution to her position becoming untenable.

Despite or even because of her electoral success she was in a bit of bind a large block of the vote a lot of local power that it seemed she couldn't or wouldn't do much with , how much her resignation has to do with just being generally jaded , specifically frustrated over her Gender bill going so wrong or whether theres something personally compromising to her amidst the rumours of leaked emails we shall have to wait and see .

Sturgeon humiliated as hundreds gather in Glasgow to celebrate exit with huge conga line

Scotland's departing First Minister has spent most of her eight years in office pushing for Scottish independence.

A massive conga line reportedly took place around the square while many people were seen waving Union Jack flags in support of Scotland remaining in the UK.

Champagne corks were popped as the hundreds of people toasted the departure of Ms Sturgeon and a potentially massive blow to any plans for Scottish independence.

There were also reportedly full families present at the celebration, while many had electric signs and banners.

Donald Trump tonight reacted with joy to Nicola Sturgeon quitting as Scottish First Minister. The ex-US President insisted Scots would be "much better off" without Ms Sturgeon in the top job.

In a statement, Mr Trump said: “Good riddance to failed woke extremist Nicola Sturgeon of Scotland!

"This crazed leftist symbolises everything wrong with identity politics.

"The wonderful people of Scotland are much better off without Sturgeon in office!"

Nicola Sturgeon humiliated as just 177 people A WEEK visit her Scexit website

Launched with a blaze of publicity by Nicola Sturgeon and Patrick Harvie last summer, the 'Building a New Scotland' campaign website has been seen by just a few thousand online visitors

The First Minister launched the SNP's latest campaign to break up Britain in June with a press conference at Bute House alongside her Scexiteer ally Patrick Harvie.

Nicola Sturgeon claimed the Building a New Scotland campaign would "make afresh the case for Scotland becoming an independent country" as she released the first in a series of wafer-thin pamphlets.

According to figures released on Friday by the Scottish Government, the taxpayer-funded publicity blitz drew 9,786 visitors to the Building a New Scotland website in the first week.

This may seem impressive but is far lower than even most commercial websites would expect in a week. And the numbers only got worse from that point on...

By the week of September 12-18, just 177 people logged on to the website over the entire seven days. For most online ventures, this would almost certainly be regarded as a massive failure.

So the new SNP Leadership contestants are a long standing SNP member who happens to be a man who supports the gender recognition reform bill or a woman who resigned from the SNP because of it.... I wonder who's going to walk win this contest....

What a load of horse-shit. The biggest thing that Sturgeon got wrong was supporting transgender rights over cis-gender women. The independence issue? Well let's look at the issues from the perspective of some Scottish citizens:
https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politic...would-make-scots-change-their-mind-about-inde

Seems pretty clear. Scotland have observed the absolute economic disaster of Brexit and now they are rightly afraid the same will happen to them (again) because after all the laws of economics (the gravity effect) applies to them just as much as the rest of the UK (as we found out much to our chagrin, well not for us remainers who 'told you so') .

You DO NOT make trade infinitely more difficult and expensive with your biggest trading partner IF you wish to do well economically. The Scots now realise that going independent will be painful and very costly, at least in the short term, while they try to apply for EU membership, which could take a long time realistically.

The rest of the UK and England in particular are Scotland's biggest trade partner. So it's not that Brexit has worked so well to put Scotland off independence, it's actually because Brexit has failed so spectacularly that the Scots have now thought, can we really afford the economic devastation of doing the same as Westminster, again? It would be a double blow to their economy, leaving the EU (they had no choice), and then leaving the UK, and then having to wait it out while applying to join the EU. Who's going to absorb 5 years minimum of economic deprivation just to get to the end of the rainbow?

However the yes vs. no vote is very very close, 49% to 51%. Give it a year or two and when the Scots see Northern Ireland continuing to outperform the rest of the UK economically and the tide will turn, very quickly. Most people just care about how money they have in their pocket at the end of the day, and the people of Scotland are no different.

And who gives a shit what Trump thinks? He's a nobody. Let him visit Scotland and see what a warm welcome he receives lol
The Scots are less polite than us English ;)

Never mind the trans stuff, there's also a potentially large funding scandal due to break soon.

Claiming that the job is too stressful and they want a quiet life seems to be the new excuse for politicians escaping defeat or scandal.

maybe in the next referendum the right wing scots who went into England to vote leave in Brexit will stay in their own country

Imagine being such a loser you carry a sign to talk shit about another nations politicians while strolling on the beach.

Get a fucking life, seriously.

As a political operator, I didn’t mind her, especially in the era of shit-tories, brexit and the ongoing issues of monarchy. She was always ready to stick the shiv in, and conservatives made it pretty easy.

She was wrong. On the issue of trans — she didn’t have the proper footwork and got knocked-down. The only people arguing for MTF people being in all-female prisons are those who’ve lost perspective. Nicola didn’t foresee the inevitable crash that was coming, and was her own saboteur, stammering over her own policy. A major political fall that will be examined in poli-sci courses for some time.

Yeah maybe she just thought get out now because as you suggest she'd realised she'd gone down a political cul de sac. She wasn't ever going to be able to deliver on independence in the next few years, and it wasn't going to be an easy time for her with the gender bill resistance and the intrusion into her personal emails.
