Maybe late night comedians can get back to..... you know... actually telling jokes? The whole divisive lecturing propaganda machine tends to get a little stale after a while. Kimmel thought he was invincible. He thought he could demonize opposing opinions all he wanted with impunity. He was so blinded by his ego he couldn't see how mocking a father that was just slaughtered in front of his wife and children might be a bad thing.

So it's okay for the FCC chair to threaten a host of a show resulting in the network suspending the show because the host criticized the Government.

This is perfectly ok now. Guy should have "just complied."

I'm very much afraid that I really feel many saying they would be vocal against that, wouldn't be so vocal against it if it actually happened. My skepticism is quite bad, but it seems super rare that people speak out against the party line once committed. I dont' know you well enough to have an opinion, and will take you at your word that you would, and that is commendable.].

But there's a bizarre drift that happens with these things. Maybe not the greatest analogy, but say with war in Gaza.... At the beginning lot of folks that are very pro-Israel kind of said the strong show of military force was needed, but there isn't any ethnic cleansing, and its a contained conflict etc because that would be wrong etc; but then as time passes and hey, maybe ethnic cleansing was the goal all along it seems people in that camp are like "it needs to be done", and expanding it to like several countries was needed etc.

I definitely don't want to hijack the convo to that conflict, but would just say it seems like once someone is deep enough down the rabbit hole of loyalty to a party/politician, it seems like backbones get very soft.

Well if you admit that the FCC is the one to blame, then you kinda have to admit that this is a 1st Amendment violation. The FCC is part of the federal government. And you just conceded they have some leverage over what happened (so state action). And this was definitely Constitutionally protected speech.

I would say the market place determining it is one thing. The government doing so is infinitely more frightening.

And by "the government", it's really just the one guy. And every time he grabs some huge bite of power, his base goes weak at the knees.

I’m not American, so I don’t really follow any late-night shows regularly. However, I’ve watched quite a few clips of him on YouTube—especially the “Celebrities Read Mean Tweets” and “Show Us on the Map” segments, as well as interviews when celebrities I like were on the show. I wouldn’t say he was extraordinarily funny, but it was entertaining at times. I’m also not someone who’s into canceling people.

That said, we have to acknowledge that it was largely his side—leftists, liberals, etc.—who really pushed the whole cancel culture in the first place. That’s just a fact. So, in this case, I can’t deny there’s a certain satisfaction in seeing Kimmel reap what he has sown.​

If Trump actually DID decide to follow his Chief of Staff and loudly declare the entire Democratic Party a domestic terrorist organization, do you reckon MAGA-type folks would push back?

I think a shockingly big amount of people would go along with it. Rage baiters media accounts would be too afraid of losing viewership to speak out against it. People have so much adopted their "sleazy lawyer" roles in politics just out of sheer habit they'd be trying to come up with rationalizing why it's the right thing to do.

Confucanmus would put up a few paragraphs of sanctimonious flatulence, about how the Dems brought it on themselves, because only 6 of them went to a vigil over a dead podcaster that Trump himself didn't fucking go to, which meant that they simply weren't taking accountability for the fact that someone who didn't even vote Democrat shot the aforementioned podcaster.

I'm unware of exactly what Kimmel said but I thought I had seen him say something about the shooter being MAGA?

In any case, its obviously tantamount to 'hate speech' in the mind of the 'Can, even though hate speech doesn't actually exist in the words of The Sainted Charlie, and its hardly befitting to His Legacy to contradict His Wisdom in that way. But still, I guess people who agreed with everything he did in his lifetime get a little more leeway, a little more wriggle-room, in following His Teachings, whereas those of us too benighted to see the light of his example are beholden to follow it all the more closely.

Its kind of like you have to be a brilliant, genius boxer in order to know when to flaunt the basic rules of boxing, whereas mere mortal needs to follow the textbook more rigidly.
