JDS fell off hard, feels bad man

He was only good because he was super fast with KO power. He never had very much skill. Just went in with chin up and threw big punches. Anyone, even Matt Hughes or Royce Gracie, has the skill to do that; only a few people have the athleticism to do that. Like Ngannou. He lost his speed due to age and USADA. Now he sucks.

I'm not sure Reem ever did figure it out, he's been KOd 17 times between K1 and MMA.
Reem was at a time of getting cut from the ufc after getting ko’ed by bigfoot,Travis,Rothwell
He changed his style after those losses and those fighters are all retired, now he only has losses to the top 3 of the division and the champ now

Unless he revamps his fighting style like Arlovski I hope JDS hangs em up. No need for him to take more punishment. Been a fan of his for quite a while and I can't help but feel bad for him every time he gets slept after the Cain trilogy. Man those last 2 fights probably took years off his career

Always been a fan. He looked slower and he can’t take shots like he used to. Ever since the Cain fights, he doesn’t do well when his back hits the cage. He turns away, ducks, walks, etc. always gets caught there now

I do suspect ....that things may have started changing for Dos Santos around about..........July 2015.
Just a guess. Must be a change in his training or something..

Top cringe whenever anyone says Cain "took years off his life" and "ruined him". Junior took Stipe's best shots for three rounds, and looked light on his feet, a year after the second Cain beating.

Junior's massive decline "coincided" perfectly with USADA. Aggression was completely gone vs Overeem, which was his first fight post-USADA. Chin also left the building for that fight(traps, neck musculature greatly diminished).

Also "he was never that good" is equally retarded. Speed, power & cardio are essential to "being good" in MMA. PERFORMANCE ENHANCING drugs have a tendency to greatly increase these parameters. Junior is the same man, but with his lean mass:bodyfat ratio getting fucked by USADA, his body no longer allows him to fight with the same ferocity, speed or durability. He's not physically able to string together high power, high speed combinations for more than a short flurry. Also, you think he suddenly forgot how to throw an overhand overnight? No, he's just missing these days because his punches are slower.

Also, when you're really powerful and physically outmatching your opponent, even glancing blows or half-blocked strikes can knock down the opponent, especially at heavyweight. Physicality is a top parameter for success in MMA, and at heavyweight that effect is magnified. It's impossible to list just how many ways performance enhancing drugs are a gamechanger for the thick boys.

Look at the change in muscle:fat distribution.

I’ve got a theory on JDS.

I think he died after Cain 3

I don’t think this JDS as we know.
I think it’s some Brazilian guy that looks like him
‘Medium Dos Santos’ if you will.

It's going to be interesting to see if UFC cut him or just leave him be.

He's had 4 straight losses and usually that means you're gone. UFC might be sitting the guy down and saying "Look man....consider your position.".

I think it's time he stopped fighting at UFC level. He just isn't anything like he used to be. If he wants to go to Bellator or whatever, fine, yeah, great. But honestly he is really not UFC material anymore. Once he's hit he just gives up and turtles. I've seen it several times now with him.

He grappled Bigfoot and dominated him on the ground before getting finished. He tossed Rogers on the ground and destroyed him. He even took down Cro Cop and held him there for most of that fight. He's had several takedowns and submissions to his resume before that. I think that this whole idea that he changed his style is exaggerated.

These new mid level guys are just not that good.

Edit: Just went back and watched the Rothwell fight because I remember that going for the takedown was what lead to his downfall and I was right. He was clipped and rocked, dipping for the takedown. He actually tried to clinch and set up a throw several times before that because that's how he usually does it ala Bigfoot, Cro Cop and Rogers.

So it just further cements my point that he hasn't changed his game much. These newer lower level guys just don't have the skills to prevent Overeem from taking them down.

JDS is more one dimensional and they keep setting him up against strikers.

He was never the same after that 2nd Cain fight. He took some big damage and that shortens your career as a fighter.

I'd like to see him retire or better still UFC to release him.

JDS downfall imo has three reasons.

Number 1 like everyone knows were the Cain beatdowns. That took a lot of his health

Number 2 USADA. He looked basicallly like a different person after USADA went in. Lost not only a LOT of his muscles but his fight agression. THat had nothing to do with the beatdowns. Sure his chin wasnt as good anymore but this really showed that JDS took high amounts of roids and needed them for his agressive style.

Number 3: contrary to other fighters he never developed his skills further. His footwork and defensive holes always stayed with him. Never learned anything complementary or changed his tactical approach. JDS is a very one dimensional fighter. We did not know that at the beginning of his career but thats why he would loose most rematches against elite opponents. While they can adapt he only knows one gear. Reem for example just outsmarted him in their fight. That wasnt about being stronger etc but just outskilling JDS.

He was never as good as he was made out in his prime but seing him right now is just sad as I think he has accumulated a lot of brain damage and maybe he wont have a pleasant time as a senior. Really wish for him to retire and enjoy time. Who knows maybe he will not have symptoms or will need diapers in his 50s.

People sqy that he was rone after cain trilogy but I remember him being pretty solid vs Stipe 1 but it wqw a war. Probably last time we saw real JDS

He was never as good as he was hyped to be, plus he's a proven cheater.

The only thing his lucky punch against an injured Cain got him was two vicious revenge beatings.

He for sure needs to step away. Great career. One of the best heavyweights of all time. But it’s over. He’s going to take a lot more damage in the next few years if he doesn’t stop.

I think the Ngannou comparison is a bit harsh on JDS, I don't think he was quite THAT dependent on his speed and whilst his game was quite narrow he wasnt generally wading forward throwing wild hooks, his big overhands and uppercuts were often very well timed.

Comes a time, with age and damage, when the chin just can't take the shots anymore. JDS, Chuck, parking lot BJ. The list goes on.

PEDs as an issue is possible I spose but I think your mistaken in thinking the effect of the Cain beatings would have to be instant.

A serious injury can lead to a fighter declining instantly but head trauma often is more of a long term effect, often when you see an instant decline after a bad KO its more a fighter having lost confidence. Head trauma though tends to catch up with someone over time although I would say it wasnt JUST Cain, JDS took significant punishment from Hunt and Stipe the first time as well.

The way he went down against Overeem did seem like an early sign of his chin going although you could perhaps say that was a VERY big punch very well timed, the second Stipe fight though definately that was the kind of punch he'd been able to take previously.

I do suspect there is a bit of truth to the Sapp comment made, not that he's anything close to the same degree but it does seem like Jnr is more willing to check out mentally when badly hurt.

He's been doing this awhile. He can only take so many shots, and it doesn't help he is facing the hardest striking division in MMA (HW) every time out.

We all love JDS, but I think it is time. Him complaining that it was a shot to the back of the head at the end was also not fun to see.
