Yeah I think waiting on Jiri. Jiri's shoulder was really fucked which was why he vacated. It wasn't going to be just a 6 month recovery. I think he said he was hoping to be able to train hard again starting later this summer. So probably late 23 or early 24 by the time he is able to knock the rust off, get back in shape, and then do a proper fight camp.

He (Hill) has to fight before then, no? No way he waits that long. He'd literally be holding the belt for a full year without a defense.

Who knows. Jiri originally teased being ready to fight in August, so maybe UFC waited on Hill thinking that was possible (Don't schedule him in June for a 5 month turnaround if the unification fight could happen two months later) but now Jiri is realizing he was way too optimisitc with that timeline. So it's a question of since they've waited this long, do they wait until December for a unification? Or do they do Hill vs someone else, risk Hill losing, in October and then have to wait until March for Jiri to fight again?

Had 3 straight KOs before beating Glover. In the fight versus Glover, he won all 5 rounds. It's not like he was just gifted the title.

He may not be the best ever, but he is legitimate.

Hill's run, in normal conditions, should have made a legitimate argument to ask for a tittle shot, or a #1 contender bout, rather than a UFC belt.

It was for a belt only because UFC has been cheap as fuck with the LHW divisions and refused to pay what they worth top contenders as Davis, Bader and Corey, apart from Nemkov.
Needleds to say that would not have had much of a chance vs Jones

I agree, Jones still runs LHW if he wants to. It's not the strongest division in the world right now.

That still doesn't make Hill any less legitimate as a champion. Not like he was coming off a loss when he was granted a title shot and then won a split decision. He's been on a run and dominated Glover.

Oh, totally. He MAY be really good.
But his path to the title was kinda odd. Didn't beat the champion to become champ. (Kinda like how a lot of people didn't take Khabib seriously as champ until he beat Conor.)
And while he's beaten most people put in front of him, it hasn't exactly been a murder's row. I think most people have at least a handful of light-heavyweights ahead of him.
Jones never lost his belt. Jiri never lost his belt. Jan and Ankalaev had heir draw.
Hill kinda had some luck on his side on his road to becoming champ.
I'm not trashing him. I just don't many people would confidently say he's the best light-heavyweight.

Fair. I'd agree, he is not even close to the best yet. I just don't think he is as bad of a champion as some may think either.

In my opinion, the UFC tittle loses legitimacy when they ley go so many top contenders in a given division.
It was the main criticism when UFC started to cut top contenders as Fitch/Okami/Shields back in the day even if we are too accostumed at this point.

Not saying its Hill',s fault, or that he isn a very good fighter. I just acknowledging the context in whch his run was worthy of LHW gold

UFC is forcing him to wait for Jiri. They've decided a title fight with Ankalaev, Blachowicz, or Rakic isn't worth it.

That's fair critique.

As a somewhat fan of Hill - or at least neutral on the guy - I get pretty frustrated with most analysis of him on these boards. Usually it starts and ends with "like OMG dad bod".

He's pretty damn good. He got subbed out by a bjj specialist because he was too cocky and didn't avoid the ground. Other than that he's consistently kicked ass, and has demonstrably improved the more fights he's had. But - as you point out - not against the top in the division (except Glover of course).

He certainly got a lucky draw for a title fight, but he made the most of it, and I'd love to see him fight anyone in the top 5 to see where he's at, exactly. It's just too bad the UFC demanded we wait 8-14 months for Jiri to recover. But, that's what we get when we accept that UFC is a money fight organization.

I agree. He's not exceptional in any one area, but well-rounded enough (to be competitive in the LHW division), tough, and still young/developing as a fighter.

Yeah, I don't understand this dad bod thing. Anyone that follows MMA should know that physique doesn't really mean a ton. If it did, Paulo Costa and Marlon Moraes would be undefeated and Fedor never would have won a fight.

I think Hill is very promising and intriguing. Yes, he lost to Craiggers, but so did Ankalaev, who a lot of people believe is the uncrowned champ.

If he can defend against Jiri, Ankalaev and Jan/Alex, then we'll know exactly what we have.
