WHILE the Team Alpha Male drama which has served as the narrative for this rivalry is a dead horse which has been flogged to the point of becoming mulch, the matchup is still as compelling as ever. Along with the absent Dominick Cruz, T.J Dillashaw and Cody Garbrandt make up the obvious trinity of elite talent atop the UFC bantamweight division. But where Cruz is the savvy old master, Dillashaw and Garbrandt both possess that star-making quality which is so absent at bantamweight: they have that one-punch belting power.

What makes this rematch so compelling is that the first was by no means a blow out or a commanding performance by the victor. There were elements that both fighters were bringing into play which were causing their opponent great difficulty. There are also ways in which these could be countered or hindered now that the camps have studied the tape. Let us examine some of the key moments from the first fight and consider how each man might further his chances in the rematch.

Wedging up the Middle and Taking Angles Off Kicks

Where Cody Garbrandt is known for his boxing, T.J. Dillashaw is known for his combination of kicking and shifting punches. The more competent kicker has the tools to win long range engagements, so Dillashaw began running into low kicks from well outside of Garbrandt’s boxing range. Garbrandt, however, seemed very well prepared for this. Rather than attempting to check Dillashaw’s kicks—which would place him on one leg and leave him susceptible to follow ups or being faked out—Garbrandt simply withdrew and let Dillashaw’s kicks swing by.

Eh.

Cody went full tard, TWO times in a row.

Props to Tsnake for reading it and KTFOing him tho.

, and for Garbrandt it would be best to draw Dillashaw onto single punches

Yeah, Mr. Slack. That worked great for Garbrandt.

Jack slack is back with some facts

TJ punched Cody really hard in the face.

Which is the only tactic that has ever worked in the fight game.

”Garbrandt also has a lovely left hook, which he uses well on the counter but which becomes a squared up swing once he gets into exchanges.”

What? I don’t think his left hook is nothing to write home about. ”Okay” at best.

Wasn't here some guy who called out Slack and argued with him?Could be wrong but i think Loki?

Jack Slack the man who could never dare to predict a fight with an accurate break down, instead says what he sees and has the lunacy to say Garbrandt should have drawn TJ to throw single strikes LMAO. None affiliated UFC MMA “Expert” analysts really are the bottom of the barrel

Codys holes show when he gets dragged into longer exchanges, which is exactly what TJ did to him. Learn what you're watching.

That was not a long exchange. Gabrandt tried to capitalize on shots, didn't succeed, got back. Missed one hook in hooks' exchange and got hurt, never recovered afterwards.

Kinda true, actually. Cody got fucked up mostly because he got reckless and caught in the middle of combinations. Had he thrown one shot at a time, or two and then evaded, it could’ve been a very different fight. TJ was always able to draw him into being sloppy, though. Nobody has really made Cody fight so unintelligently like TJ has. He fought much smarter against Cruz.

I guess it’s mostly because he was quicker than Dom and Dom didn’t have the countering ability of TJ or the power to get Cody’s actual respect. TJ is simply the better fighter, yes, styles make fights, but if Cody had the correct gameplan like he did against Dom, he very well could’ve won. Cody needs to keep those hooks tight and quick. Not load up and loop right hands while keeping he left hand down, failing to protect from counters on that side.

TJ showed improved defense this time, he had Cody figured out. What could Cody really bring to the rematch that would be any different, too, you know? TJ knew exactly what Cody was bringing - the same shit as last time, only Cody threw a few head kicks this time. Cody had an issue dropping his left hand in the rematch, and TJ took advantage of it by ending combos with rights or countering with a rights.

Cody had the perfect plan and physical ability for Dom, TJ had the perfect plan for Cody. Way she fawkin’ goes, boys.

Cody is his division's Overeem/Schaub.

Lol, exactly. It was only when Cody stayed in the pocket that he got clipped. So Jack was right.

Look, everyone knew Codys weakness in the pocket when it gets past 1 or 2 punches. Before and after the rematch.

Cody rushed in and got countered repeatedly before going down in a drawn out exchange which was exactly TJs gameplan.

You're grasping at straws and it's so obvious.

You realize Cody has fought the same in nearly every UFC fight?

Alternating hooks thrown from the chest, hands down once he throws more than one shot.

Dom had less power and even worse offensive and defensive striking especially in the pocket compared to TJ. Cody didn't fight any less smart in the Cruz fight or either TJ fights compared to the Almeida or Mozugaki fights.

Cody hasn't fought better or worse than any of his others, TJ is just more aware in the pocket and Cody has become predictable from showing the same holes since day 1.

This. Cody is wide open while throwing the second or third punch of a combo. He's a great offensive puncher but his defense is bad.

I don't think this applies to the first fight

I don't think he did much wrong in the first fight anyway. He came out strong, looked great in R1 and then TJ made adjustments thanks to his corner and came out looking 10x better in round two and simply won the fight

As far as Cody vs Cruz, Cruz isn't a pocket fighter. So while Cody is open, hands down chin up while throwing combos, Cruz is circling away. TJ stays in the pocket, he uses ducking and swaying to counter.

That's why TJ is 2-0 vs Cody and Cruz is 0-1. Cruz doesn't like to lead and is not good in the pocket. TJ is a monster in the pocket with his v steps and his upper body movement.
