Izzy is just overrated striker

What if...and this is going to be a fucking retarded take so be prepared....the dudes he was fighting in title fights weren't so bad themselves?

Because it seems like Izzy's had a pretty great career from my casual perspective.

you write like a bitchy redditor

He was never that good.

I don't like Izzy but let's not beat the horse when it's down. He was a good striker who relied a lot on counters and had excellent mobility. Not a more well-rounded MMA fighter Anderson Silva, who was also a counter-puncher but also had knees and kicks

Rewatched the fight.

Izzy looks emaciated, a bit thinner, missing that robustness in his physique.

In previous fights, he had the pop to make fighters respect him, he seemed very flat.

Sean Strickland's style won't go well against a decently skilled power striker.

Very weird fight for me, congrats to Sean, but I don't see him being a long reigning champ.

Honestly, I think Izzy might have lost a step, he didn't look right from the get go. I know Sean pressured him, and had an effective game plan, but yeah Izzy looked weak / drained.

yea, if there is one word to describe Izzy in that fight it is weird. We have seen Israel Adesanya fight many times and there is no question that he is an extremely sophisticated, elite striker. We will never know if Izzy looked weird because there was actually something wrong with him or if it was just due to Sean Strickland rising to the moment and outperforming Izzy by a wide margin because this was his opportunity to prove to himself and everyone that he is somebody, not that white trash, racist, scum he feels like he is supposed to be.

At this point it doesn't even matter. Sean won the fight without question and is UFC Champion and I think myself and many others that were not particularly fond of his image previously now see him very differently and are very happy for him.

To be fair, kicks are also a big part of Israel's skill set and actually defended his belt several times relying on them.

He is more systematic, orthodox and one dimensional than Silva was

A rematch will give us an idea whether Israel underestimated him and which is why he lost.

He got into a boxing match with the better boxer and lost. Should've utilized other tools but Sean did a good job shutting him down.

Sean was just better on the night, it is what it is.

Adesanya got taken down by Vettori or Whittaker too. 4 times each.

No, it's not true that his takedown defense was "far superior" than Silva's.
If Anderson only had to defend takedowns from Vettori, Whittaker or Jan he would look like a good deffensive wrestler too, as he shut down the TD attempts from as good if not more skilled wrestlers than the aforementioned in Okami, Brunson or Marquardt.

Good points. ALSO, I think Anderson was more than willing to go to the ground because he had plenty of confidence in his BJJ and could finish a fight there.

Izzy was never good.

we have heard that 3 times in his last 7 fights.

wait I hear it so much it might be true lol

He’s 5 and 5 in his last 10, outstruck by romero jan pereira sean, outjabbed by Whittaker in the rematch despite a 7 inch reach advantage, can’t finish people unless they run into him with their hands down, if he can’t leg kick you he is completely lost, what a great striker

5-5 in his last 10, yet his record's 24-3

how does that work exactly? And you said Whittaker out jabbed him in the rematch, yet Izzy KO'ed him the 1st fight and pretty clearly won the rematch. Are you telling me it's better to lose a fight where you had the better jab than to actually win? I can't think of one of his last 10 fights he won that involved bullshit judging where he should have actually lost. And even though you believe he apparently lost 2 fights he won. He didn't....

And lawler beat condit, right? If your favourite fighter was robbed you would be all over sherdog calling it out. Pretty clear, okay buddy, nothing clear about it, a close fight lot of people feel rob won. Yoel clearly won, but adesanya made the fight so boring that people forget

I just rewatched the fight, Izzy landed some of his best (single) punches in rounds 4 and 5, but he was getting steadily beaten up and Strickland wasn't fading. Fast counter punches. Izzy's really good he's just a specialist, he has amazing low kicks, feints, and counter-striking. He isn't as good at going first or fighting on the front foot, and it wasn't obvious how exploitable these flaws are until he fought Strickland who exposed him with top tier boxing fundamentals and decades of sparring experience practicing his defense.

He lapped everyone in the division, it was hard finding opponents that he didn’t already beat. People call khabib goat of the lightweights, izzy was far more accomplished

Had close fight with Cannonier,Whittaker,Romero and lost to Jan Pereira and Sean on the feet.

People overrated Izzys striking because he is bad matchup for Alex and he still lost to him 3 times.

Izzy is jabbable as fck has very poor boxing defence, bad boxing combinations, throws sloppy leaping hooks againt the fence and he doesn't have power too and doesn't attack the body

Bro. He had a close fight with an aged an worn down, past his prime Anderson. I actually had Andy winning a round. Even Gastelum had a close fight against him.

Jizzy is a point fighter. If he can't out point you, or catch you with a strike, and get you backing up to finish you with follow up strikes, he loses 10/10 times. Especially if you throw in some grappling and TD's.
