I think the checks and balances are more fragile than some think. Trump’s party is in control of the legislature, and they refuse to act as a check. There’s one down. Judges can make decisions, but they can’t enforce them. It wouldn’t surprise me if eventually Trump ignores some decisions he doesn’t like, he’s put feelers out for that already. Musk is screaming for impeachment of every judge that’s ruled against them—fortunately they don’t have the Senate votes for that.

I guess it all starts with spending but if there's a deficit I think the rich should fill it before programs to help those in poverty are cut.

But even thats kind of vague. I dont know what fill it before other programs are cut means. Like, fill it how much? Or should we cut programs that arent operating very efficiently before taking more money from citizens? How much should a billionaire pay before you say "Ok, thats enough"?

Put it another way. I constantly hear that the rich need to pay their fair share, but no one really seems to have a concrete idea of what that is. You dont even have to be super wealthy to get hit brutally hard come tax time.

Reality is that Trump has few years left in this life while most in congress has many. They aren't risking their short term gains for long term fallout.
 
Liberals now are defending the IRS because DOGE is looking at it lt. Democrats are going to screw themselves in the midterms by trying to protect the IRS.

I can't tell if he's a little slow on the uptick (I'm trying to be nice) or trolling. He doesn't seem to understand how our tax system works and then he asked if I want the government to take the overwhelming majority of what billionaires had after I mentioned taxing them out of existence, then supposedly took me seriously when I said "no, that's absolutely not what I meant."

I don't have the patience for this shit anymore lol. I'm not even THAT knowledgeable but it seems like I have to stop speaking in sentences and explain how syllables work every time I talk to him and some others on here, figurately speaking.

I've talked to some shockingly misguided and ignorant people in real life so I can't really tell when someone's trolling; everything is plausible lol. During Trump's first term a big time MAGA guy IRL told me Trump was going after Amazon and I told him he was giving Bozos and Amazon tax breaks. He tried to argue something, I bowed out because what he was saying was nonsense, I don't even remember it and he wasn't listening to actual, verifiable, facts of what was going on. I almost wish I could see him again just to mention Bozos being at Trump's inauguration and going to Mar-a-Lago.

Anyway, Bob's points shift every conversation too, further away from whatever he was trying to originally say.

He’s a tough nut to crack. I’ve never understood anyone who thinks the extreme wealth inequality in America is good. Everyone talks about how young our country is and calls our brand of democracy an experiment. Great, if this was a play test and I saw some dude well on his way to being a fucking trillionaire, 1% of households in the United States holding 30.9% of the country's wealth while the bottom 50% holds just 2.6%, I’d want to get under the hood and figure out how to make things more equitable for all the citizens of the country.

Yep. And the last time we had this kind of inequality was The Guilded Age which if I'm not mistaken is where the term "robber baron" came from.

People's defense of the wealthy being taxed is so bizarre to me. We ain't talking taking food out of people's mouths, their kids not being able to go to the best schools, take vacations, buy spendy cars, etc. IIRC even at the highest tax rate on individuals that we ever had they had to make 3 or 4 million in a year before hitting the highest tax rate. It doesn't materially affect their lives beyond making it harder to hoard immense amounts of wealth.

Then again the anti-government sentiment doesn't make sense to me either when we can see the biggest issue with our government and those around the globe seems to be private interests manipulating politicians for their favor.

I just gotta throw my hands up after awhile. A lotta people are heavily propagandized.

Nobody wants to pay taxes but we sure do love living in our Democracy. I'm not even ragging on the ultra wealthy. If you want to hoard money that's fine. Save as much as you can. When it comes to the government though it's like paying the rent. What are we allocating for spending?

I'm all for eliminating waste but I think our citizens deserve a minimum standard of living. Taxes are the government's income so if our budget is X amount then that's how it's going to be paid. People at the poverty level aren't going to fill the gap if all anyone pays is 15% of their income which is the Biblical tax rate. If we need a strong military and have obligations to those that have been paying into SS all their lives and to provide Healthcare for those that are in poverty then I see nothing wrong with expecting those that are ultra wealthy and benefit the most from our Democracy to foot the bill.

It's laughable to feel sorry for someone to not be able to fund a space mission to Mars because they are being tasked with making sure our citizens have a basic standard of living with medical care available to them
The horror of taxing a billionaire until he's just a hundred millionaire...
