Islam's performance against Moicano on short notice compared to Khabib against Iaquinta short notice is very telling

Islam is a superior fighter. There will come a time when arguing against this will be insanit

Almost as if a shorty-stocky wrestler is tougher to take down then a tall-lanky BJJ guy…interesting…
Al and Renato are about the same size. They're like an inch apart.

Based on made-up UFC stats.

They list Kevin Lee as 5’9” and Al as 5’l0 and yet Kevin is an inch taller in the stare down.

Also it’s stance/style based - Al is semi-crouched and hunched in his stance while Renato is very tall and upright.

I've met Al at a couple of different gyms. I don't recall him being short. I have no idea how tall Kevin Lee is, but my impression is he is not short either.

I think Brazilians who are good BJJ players are pretty easy for these dudes because they lack takedown defence and they play BJJ on the bottom and aren't used to trying to work up. At a high level these scraps usually go the way of the Dagi.

They should be in danger against guys like Oliveira but they’re not. Dare I say it BJJ is a bit gimmicky?

Some petty ass shit right here

Quite the opposite. A lot of Dagi guys struggle with BJJ guys. Dagi guys are hardly in the UFC so I dont think most people actually understand them at all. They just think Islam/Khabib (which is also why people misunderstand Umar who is not an oppressive grappler at all).

I have no idea why people keep bringing up Do-Bronx. Do-Bronx isn't that kind of grappler, and he got his ass beat on the feet before he got submitted anyway.

Submissions and ground fighting is by far the hardest thing guys from Russia struggle with. Russia has elite wrestlers and strikers, they do not have many elite submission fighters. It makes sense if people stopped to think about that.

Khabib's team is much better at ground fighting than other teams that have Dagi guys on it.

what the 2 fights tell me is that Khabib was comfortable riding out a decision because there was zero danger. Islam had to get Moicano to the ground and out of there before he has a major fuck up on the feet and gets Adriano Martins'd.
Danger on the feet? Islam has already outstruck better strikers than moicano lol

It's not gimmicky, it can just be shut down by super high level guys on top who also mix BJJ in with their training. Islam finished the fight with a BJJ choke anyway.

Come on man he could have finished Moicano with a Chinese burn

I don't know how much two different fighters' fights against different opponents tells us at all...

I'm just saying they list Kevin Lee as shorter than Al, and when they do a stare down it's clear Kevin is taller.

They've done the same shit with Shane Carwin and plenty of fighters, the "stats" don't always line-up with reality. Regardless Moicano is slightly taller and fights in a more upright stance and doesn't have a wrestling background, so we are talking about a trifecta of variables.

I don't want to get stuck in the nuances of debating being one or two inches shorter is the most critical aspect of TDD though - the most important variable being that Moicano is a BJJ guy that isn't that good with wrestling, of which the best part in that aspect is his clinch-wrestling, but he's not super-strong and doesn't have a great shot or stance to counter TDD.

Anyways Khabib still got 6 takedowns on Iaquinta with 10+ minutes of control while winning 50-44/50-44/50-43 and jabbed his face off without ever being in danger.
