Is this Renzo Gracie quote accurate from your experience?

Its simple that experience will trump books any day. You dont need to ask people to know if its accurate.

yes, rolling around with other men trying to choke each other is real brain food...another self important idiot who thinks he changed the world.

really? Which philosophies does jiu jitsu teach on the mats? If you’re able to list more than 10, compare that to an Ivy League school. Lol.

I love jiu jitsu, but it’s not that deep. All of that no ego, oss, douchebag filter, budo, zen, Bjj lifestyle, etc is hogshit.

it’s just a sport/martial art that has sports/martial arts applications.

Bjj was invented by thugs and bullies. Lmao. I guess they needed to add the “honor” and tma Schtick to appeal to broader audiences.
You are thinking just in terms of sports and BJJ. I think it's more about overall philosophy of combat/war which can also include life/survival/death. Also philosophy on self discipline, mental fortitude, and strengthening the body and the mind. Zen is a philosophy all on it's own but it is also used by martial artists because a Zen mindset can be synergistic with martial arts and combat.

Marcus Aurelius is one of the great philosophers, and he used his experience/knowledge from combat/wars and being a ruler to forge his philosophies and is best known for his stoic philosophy. Without combat/wars he wouldn't have been able to form his philosophies.

It's bigger than combat/martial arts.

For example someone that just knows school and books wouldn't have the experience and wisdom of a Marcus Aurelius. There would be a lot things in the world they wouldn't understand. Marcus Aurelius is just one example, there are a lot of other philosophers from a combat/martial arts background.

Training Jiu-Jitsu and MMA has been a huge part of my life since 2005. These places have often been filled with some of the dumbest people I've ever had to interact with. It would be hard to exaggerate how untrue what Renzo said is.

What I will say is that Jiu-Jitsu is a lot like a cult and professors get very used to forcing their idiotic theories on life to their students, while no one ever pushes back because they want to get promoted. Not sure if that's Renzo's idea of philosophy or not.

I love learning martial arts and a lot of the philosophies and experiences that come with it. But there is definitely a lot of culty shit going on with BJJ. It's even more annoying when the guy who shows up 2-3 times a week and trains for an hour is all up the instructor's ass and posts on social media about BJJ when they are actually terrible and seem more interested in saying they train than actually doing it. I haven't really seen it in muay thai or MMA but in BJJ it seems really common.

Renzo - and quite a few at his academy - are fucking hypocrites. And love to stroke their egos with quotes like that.

Many of the great NFL Football coaches were/are "PhD" students of the philosophies of war.

Yeah, I absolutely love BJJ but lets not pretend that it's much more than an acceptable method of play fighting with your friends when you're an adult.

I've heard some of the most ridiculous opinions I've ever heard on the mats.

This is Renzo's best quote..

Also...Serra said that Renzo is one of the nicest guys he ever met...but je can switch in a heartbeat...

Check out the UFC Unfiltered Podcasts with Renzo a guest and the police officer who prevented Renzo from a lot of trouble with the law...

Anyone agreeing with Renzo is probably academically below average.

Imagine thinking inventing a new BJJ choke is equivalent to inventing new technology.

PhD Professor: I derived the mass-energy formula E=mc^2
BJJ Professor: Pfft that's nothing. I discovered you can break another man's elbow if you bend it the other way. Imma call it the Kimura.

True but a man that can kill you with his bare hands matters at the end in a sad way.

Hard to say. You do meet and make friends of all education and crafts on the mats. You may have never met anywhere else besides college.

You can actually learn alot from your fellow teammates in life and business.

I agree with that, but you could also say that about golf, cross stitching club, badminton or pretty much anything else.

I think actually physically competing against each other day in and day out bring you closer then those sports you listed.

It does, but they were just some random examples. Anything which gets a bunch of people from different walks of life with different life experiences in the same area regularly is going to lead to some exchange of knowledge socially.

I just don't see why some BJJ players feel the need to mark us out as some special elite club of people, when we're just regular dudes who happen to like cuddling in pyjamas.
