Is there a bigger career accomplishment than being double champ?

I’m taking about double digit title consecutive defenses
well I'm not , I said double digit title wins.

That gate is a bit too high IMO

Losing your title and Regaining it is actually an incredible achievement as well. Most champs can't.

I personally am old fashioned and love the title defenses, champions defending their belts against the number 1 contenders in their division over and over is how its really supposed to be.

I always feel this double champ so called "superfight" stuff is all a flash in the pan, there is no consistency, the belts get passed around like confetti these days and so many interim belts all the time, it just gets so silly and comical.

I really believe modern UFC is lacking a long reigning champion, thats why there is a lack of stars as well. A long reigning champ will build that "aura" , its lacking so much these days, huge turnover of champs.

Ok but even still, WMMA is different, there is zero depth there. But with men’s MMA, particularly the UFC, I don’t think it’ll ever be done again. Once you lose the belt it’s almost impossible to get it back. Volk managed to do it because of an odd circumstance where the brand new champ vacated very prematurely.

It’s a risk. Aren’t we supposed to give fighters credit for taking risks, or no?

not really because there's nothing at risk. they give up their belts in the other division. the guy who is the champ is taking the risk. and yes, i think that even of Volk when he challenged Islam. it's not a risky move for the guy moving up, the only risk is you taking an L, but as soon as you take the L everyone will just go back to their old weight and they're right back in title contention.

why do i think this? because Volk literally did that.

Perhaps, but beating ilia wouldn’t uniquely provide Islam any records. But beating Jack would etch him in the history books. So why are people so bent about his decision?

His LW reign is unimpressive, through no fault of his own. Beating Ilia and Arman next would be more impressive than moving up, beating JDM, and retiring.

This thread is a shameless stan for Islam. No surprise coming from you.

Typical emotional response from a Dagi hater. Can’t just have a civil discussion lol.

Not all "double champ" situations are the same.

Context matters. GSP beating a one-eyed, aging Bisping isn't the same as BJ moving up and smashing Hughes (the WW GOAT at the time). Jones beating a non-champion like Gane isn't the same as DC KO'ing Stipe. Etc.

Double gender champ
And longest streak of consecutive finishes

A shitload of title defences, Silva only being MW champ doesn’t diminish his legacy at all

Double champ is a gimmick and I'm tired of it. The title shot in the 2nd division is never earned so its not really that impressive of an accomplishment.

Longest winning streak
Youngest champion
Most title wins

In this era I don’t think double digit wins is feasible, we will never see that again imo. The sport has become too competitive. Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a game, but that was a relic of where basketball was in its development at the time. Won’t happen again.
I don’t think it’s impossible, but it’s definitely harder, in large part due to how long it takes to get to a title, everyone other than Anderson who did it got a TS really young. If you gave Khabib a TS when he was 25 he could’ve possibly gotten double digit defenses imo, but it takes longer to get a shot now.

That being said, I think most people account for that to an extent, and would start thinking of someone in that class today if they got close to double digit defenses, which is absolutely possible to do.

It depends. Sometimes you can cherry pick a weak champ the weight above, instead of fighting a guy who is a bad matchup in your normal weight.

But it is impressive, of course.
