is the word 'cracker' racist?

But none of what you said here is a claim that I am inferior based on my race. Maybe I'd be upset that my employees viewed me as that harsh and are using an extreme to describe my behavior, but it isn't racism.

If someone called me a dumb Pollack, that would be different.

Why not if they just called you dumb? Why dumb Pollack? Oh, that's right . . . you've chosen to make that insulting to yourself.

Are you more insulted by being called dumb or that you feel Polish people as a whole are being labeled as dumb?

Just to restate what other posters in here have said, n-bomb is racist because behind it is the belief that blacks are inferior based on race.

That just isn't the case with cracker.

Again, you might not be insulted by being labeled as a slave owner, but others might.

Is it racist? Maybe not, but it can be seen as insulting to many . . .

People tend to pick whatever definition suits them in the moment.

You mean people make up whatever definition makes their position stronger at the moment.

WTF, seriously? There's a huge difference. Calling someone a dumb Pollack means they believe you are dumb based on your race (which is racist because it assumes you're inferior because you're Polish). Just calling someone dumb is providing your assessment of their intellect (has nothing to do with race, not racist).

The only connection here is that you may be insulted by either.

Maybe not? Of course labeling someone by profession or ownership interests or by behavior is NOT racist.

I think you are confusing a discussion about racism with things that simply would piss you off.

I got jumped, beaten, and mugged when I was a kid by a group of black teens. I gotta say, during the beating I found myself being quite offended by statements like "beat that cracka's ass" and "fuck this honky bitch". Looking back, I guess I shouldn't have been so offended according to some of the posters here.

What is shocking is that there are people out there who honestly believe that only white people can be racist.

I don't know how those people would define what happened to you, but as far as I'm concerned being beaten by a gang of people because of your skin color is about as racist as it gets with the exception of killing someone because of their skin color.

Technically, it's bigoted, not racist.

Yes seriously. Calling someone a dumb Pollack means they know you're Polish and think you're dumb based on something you've done. Just like simply calling you dumb means they think you're dumb based on something you've done.

Couldn't you just as easily say they added Pollack to the insult not necessarily because they think all Polish people are dumb . . . and not that simply because you're Polish you are automatically dumb, but because based on the actions they've seen from you they think YOU are dumb?

I think you are confusing a discussion about racism with things that simply would piss you off.

Me and a lot of other folks apparently.

No it doesn't.

And no to your 2nd question. Why add it unless you are categorizing all those of Polish decent as dumb? Why would race factor into their intellect? It shouldn't and that's why it's racist.

so...
if something is racist but not offensive
what makes it racist?
isn't offense the point?

can something offensive about race not be racist?

While you're unscrewing that bolt, also know that it is possible to be racist, but not hateful.

Are you speaking for all white people here?? :(

You people and tying the "power of a word" to oppression . . .

I as an individual decide what words are oppressive to me . . . not some larger group who feels the need to be butt hurt about meaningless words.

dont be a cracker

I'm sure it's spot on timing if the music was added

Nope. Shouldn't be offended. Some random white dude 200 years ago owned some random black dude who was captured and sold by some other random black dude. You are guilty because of your genes.

Too many definitions of what racism is and isn't. These discussions get so confusing.

It's not confusing at all. Some people just like to purposefully confuse others and define racism in a way that excludes situations in which Caucasians are the victim.

unfortunately alot of those are self hating white people.

It's not racist against white people in my opinion, they were the ones with the whip. But I would to have the N word back because white people created that word, so it should be ours.
