Is Jamaica any good?

There's lots of excellent Jamaican restaurants here in Nola. Jerk chicken is awesome. @paynebringer

lol.

That is the weakest, tamest looking tourist spiced jerk chicken I've ever seen.

Jerk chicken should be slightly blackened and with lots of spice.

I was in Jamaica this past July. I love it. The ganja is overrated but man what a beautiful country. The bob marley tour to 9 mile was incredible, as was the weed cake and tea. Only have one piece of cake though!

Yeah - St. Maarten, St. Barth’s, Turks and Caicos, Jost van Dyke (BVI) and various Bahamian islands are all above Jamaica in my list

I always tell people that it depends on what you are looking for.

if you want the feeling of a tiny secluded get away island where everything is formed around tourism then Jamaica is not your place. Many of the other islands are way better.

As one of the larger islands in the Caribbean it has a diverse population much of which is not around tourism. they have also had big issues with drug crime at times.

But few islands can compete with Jamaica for raw beauty or its topography. Few islands have mountains (Blue Mountain famous coffee), plains, valleys, rivers and rapids and falls and volcanic activity fed hot springs. A few islands have a little bit of some of that but not it all like Jamaica.

For those who do not like to just escape and hideaway on beaches and like to travel amongst locals and meet people and do stuff that is off the beaten path Jamaica is great if you are a savvy tourist.

Its the Caribbean. Jamaica as with all the island countries in that region are naturally beautiful.

They are all developing countries though so your experience will vary depending on what type of tourist you are.

If you're the wanderlust, off-the-beaten path type then the Caribbean is an excellent region to explore provided you properly plan and have basic common sense. Know the local culture, the ppl, the risks and plan your stay.

If you're the cruise ship, resort type then you best stay within those areas.

I agree it always reminds me of my native Cuba

You arent kidding with the developing countries comment. Around 2005 when I went to Atlantis (paradise island) for the first time we had to get through what looked like a commercial of African children with flies flying around their faces and malnourished dogs struggling to walk around.....then bam gold plated ceilings in Atlantis. Now that area is completely avoided

You nailed it.

I find it funny how many people who have USA locations like to dismiss places as shit holes because there may be violence in parts or troubles in parts while they seem ignorant of the fact that in many States in the US there is a 'wrong side of the tracks' that can make these shitholes look nice in comparison. they seem to think that developing world countries should not have the issues that a First world country like the US has.

Just like someone would say stay out of East S. Louis so too do you have to stay out of certain areas in the Caribbean.

If you are flying from Europe , wants the point of flying 9 or 10 hours just to be in an all inclusive ?
I was perplexed why some of my family members went to Mexico and spent 2 weeks in the hotel. 11 hour flight to stay in a hotel and not see anything else.
Might as well stay in Europe .
