One of the nicest most honest guys I know is Jamaican. He's a great guy. From great Family.
With some of the criminal element there I think you either get fantastic people like my friend or all out fucking criminals.

There are some nice areas. Most of it is a 3rd world shithole but there are some beautiful beaches. I’d like to go to the area where Ian Fleming lived.

Goldeneye is indeed beautiful. It’s like everywhere else really you just have to find the nice areas. In Jamaica’s case I highly recommend Ricks Cafe (Negril in general)

Depends on where you go I like Mobay (Montego Bay) Kingston can get rough if you travel as a tourist you good, travel as a native be on your P's & Q's...

Co worker vacationed there last year. He said he was instructed right from the beginning to stay in safe areas.
He said the prices were good, employees at the resort were friendly, the vacationers were instructed not to tip anyone because they didn't want to encourage it and not to go outside of the resort without escort. The beach had guards with machine guns standing around and the area was fenced in.
You may be able to stay outside of the tourist areas but my impression from him was it could be very unsafe you're not careful.

We walked around Negril a lot when we were there. Just don't walk on the beach at night. During the day we strolled up and down 7 mile beach with no issues other than people trying to sell us shit.
At night we walked along the main road/strip to go to Alfred's for live reggae on the beach. Again, people pushing drugs and beers and such but if you're not interested you tell them and they eventually back off.
Our second week in Negril we were in a different hotel on the cliffs and we walked from our hotel to Ricks and other restaurants and stores during the day with no issues. If someone gets rude with you just walk away. Some people will give you shit for not buying anything from them but just keep walking, worked for us.
If you stay in Ocho Rios or Montego Bay I'd stick to the don't leave without an escort policy a bit more and based upon some friends experiences I wouldn't even consider Kingston. But you can always hire a cab driver to take you around too.
The year before our Negril trip we stayed in Montego Bay for a music festival. We had a cabbie that took us to a "whitewater" rafting excursion we booked. Afterwards we asked him to take us to his favorite place for jerk chicken. Then we went to the outdoor markets in Ocho Rios and and he took us down by the falls and basically showed us around and kept all of the pushy vendors off our backs. We gave the guy like 100 bucks for at least several hours of his time. Well worth it imo.

One of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean. You have some of the best beaches anywhwere and you have mountains and rainforests and waterfalls.
Certain areas you must avoid (but where is that not true? Certainly not in the US) but if you are a smart tourist you can go many, many places that are not just the tourist traps. But the tourist traps there are top notch. I was just there for New Years with my gal and we had an awesome time.

I would recommend a resort—other parts of Jamaica can be kind of shitty, and cabs are cheap to go into town, as are tours. I’ve done a couple and prefer Half Moon Bay.
Rum and spices are good. Weed is shit, but I’m guessing it’s because I’m white.

Shit compared to other stuff you have had elsewhere or that you just don't like it? Because weed aficionado rank Jamaica as one the best sources of weed. Geez I think it is their national flower and many consider it a sacrament.

i stayed at an all inclusive resort and stayed at a normal hotel in montego bay.
the hotel i was at in kingston was pretty shitty.
there are parts of jamaica that i wouldn't recommend non-locals go to but there are other hidden gems that most people miss because they are so caught up in the partying or they have no access to.
