Is it wrong to call a Dagestani "Russian?"

Do you call Scottish people British? if yes, then you should call Khabib Russian.

It’s part of Russia, just like Chechnya. When you say Russian, as in ethnic Russian, it doesn’t apply to Khabib and other fighters that are of different ethnicity. But they are russian citizen.
By the way, there are many other ethnic groups in Dagestan aside from Avars.

Khabib has called himself Russian if I recall correctly, he certainly talks about being from Russia all the time. So there's your answer.
People from Dagestan and Chechnya are russian since three or four centuries... We can't say the same thing about a lot of people in France for example.

North Caucasus fighters are forced to represent Russia if they want to participate in MMA at global stage. They never identify nor associate with Russia at all.

It's like when Ukrainians, Uzbeks or other ex-Soviet states who were forced to represent Russia in the 1950s - 1980s Olympics, no one knew who their origin was before the Iron Curtain was abolished.

That's why most people thinks Russians are good at combat sport and weight lifting when in reality, 99% of the athletes and fighters are originally from the ex-USSR states and North Caucasus.

The North Caucasus was fully annexed by Russia in the 19th century after the Ottoman empire was defeated and withdrew from the region alongside with the Balkan.

It's crazy how the west and Russia divided the "spoils" after the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. The modern day "middle east" is still fucked up as a result. We drew lines around ethnic groups who have hated each other for centuries and said, "Ok now you're country. Here's a despotic dictator to keep you all in line."

Guys from Dagestan that are in Russian national team in any sport wear the Russian colors with pride, because it's status and prestige to represent Russian national team.

Actually about Khabib's father. There is an article on sport-express, one of the oldest and most respected sport newspapers in Russia that is called:
"Khabib's father is not let in to United States because of the Russian flag".

http://www.sport-express.ru/martial...kayut-v-ssha-iz-za-rossiyskogo-flaga-1393167/

This is from the interview:

– Что ж вам визу-то не дают?
- Why are you not getting visa?

– Я чуть-чуть патриотичней, ха-ха… Чем все остальные…
- I am a bit more patriotic, ha-ha ... Then everyone else...

– Это в чем же проявилось?
- How does that manifest itself?

- After victory and during weigh-ins I went out with a Russian flag. They don't like us over there. I had a visa before, I was in America twice. I went to Houston, Las Vegas, San Jose, Los Angeles. From there I went to San Fransisco. I was in the States for a month - didn't break any rules. And a year ago I was taken of the flight before take-off.

Yes it is wrong. You should call them Muslims first, everything else after that. They submit to Allah first.

Thanks for elaborating. I'm definitely getting a better understanding of the U.K. situation. Dagestan is still kinda blurry, there's not as many of them on these forums. I'm still trying to wrap my head around how Dagestan isn't even a country, technically. It's actually a republic. Weird. Anyway, Scouse's are ok in my book. GOAT English accent imho. I love listening to Darren Till's interviews.

haha I agree there,

as us scousers would say "is right lad" haha

Khabib's father was in the Russian army, so he'd have no problem saying he's Russian.

Dagestan is its own country, but it's part of the Russian Federation. I understand that the Dagestani people are of a different ethnic group than "Russians." (Avar vs. Eastern Slav "Russian")

Yet I constantly hear Khabib referred to as "Russian," and it seems acceptable.

Anyone know more about this region, beyond what you read in Wikipedia? I really want to know how a Dagestani feels about being called "Russian," and if this is considered offensive or acceptable.

Pardon my American ignorance.

nation within a nation I would think. Call a quebecer a quebecer or call him canadian. Whatever.

Well I would consider myself Irish. My passport says I'm Irish. A lot of people would see themselves as British. But the majority try not to focus on that anymore. We are all one.

.....quietly sings "zombie" and "where is the love" to himself as a single tear rolls down one cheek....

^When I started writing that, I meant it as a joke. I'm not sure that's what it is now that I read it back. Regardless, I agree. That's nice for you guys.

This is exactly the laid back response I would expect from a Canadian, and I mean that in the most respectful way possible. You guys are chill.

Khabib has mentioned Russia a lot in his interviews and speeches so I assume he’s taking on the distinction

Yes, it's kinda like Californian being American. It's part of Russia basically..
